Hi Guys,
I'm travelling to the US shortly and I've heard some differing views on luggage security requirements on entry. Is it true that one should leave their luggage unlocked or the US authorities will break it open?

Best policy is to get yourself a TSA approved padlock (TSA 002) and then you save yourself the bother of broken locks

Going into the US you may have your luggage locked.

However, if you are transferring then I would highly suggest you leave your luggage open. You can do this when you collect your luggage at your first point of entry, but as you will already be in a hurry I do not suggest this.

On your return from the US then yes, you will need to have your luggage unlocked or secured with a TSA approved padlock. I have seen the damage the TSA can do to a locked suitcase and your airline will not cover it. If the TSA open your bag, you will find an official letter in your suitcase telling you so.
