I heard a rumor that if you already hold an FAA class 1 medical then the CAA apply the renewal standards to your initial class 1 medical.

There is no renewal limit for myopia or astigmatism, so if this rumor is true it would appear that provided you meet the FAA initial class 1 visual standards then a CAA class 1 is obtainable.

As much as I want to believe it, I have been unable to find anything on the CAA web site to confirm this.

Does anyone know what the score is?

If neccessary I'll write to Gatwick but a reply usually takes a couple of months and they don't seem to volunteer much in the way of information.

I'm also speculating that they may apply the CAA class 1 renewal standards to those holding an FAA class 1 and an FAA CPL/ATPL with many hours experience.

Does anyone have any experience of any of this?

I haven't had any luck with the people this side of the pond.

Regards,

Al

I have no official data, but I don't think it would be possible. I've done the FAA class 1 and CAA class 2. The FAA is a glorified checkup. For the CAA, I had the most detailed medical I could imagine: ECG, X-Ray, full urine analysis, ear exam, eye exam, plus another I can't remember.

Hi

I recently failed the class 1 at Gatwick as my myopia is just outside the initial limits which my optician said i was within!!

The doc at gatwick said I would pass the renewal limits for the class 1 and could do this by getting an FAA fully qualified i.e. commercial pilot in the US, and then come back to the UK and converting this to a JAA CPL/ATPL and then go get the medical no problem on renewal limits. However I'm not sure exactly at stage I go get the medical, was too annoyed to ask all the questions I should have asked.

I don't know the exact procedure and am working it out on another post i started. Search my postings by clicking on my username for the recent one I started "FAA to JAA/CAA conversion".

Hopefully this will help and let me know if find out any info.

Regards

Will
