Earlier in the week on the way to Madrid whilst waiting for takeoff at the end of 27L at Heathrow I noticed several painted area's on the ground with the following notice.

No Magnetic Sensors

Any idea what this is all about ?

Thanks

Could be something to do with compass alignment - not certain though...

:hmm:
One suspects that magnetic sensors, or lack of them at LHR, relate to ISMAEL, a new system for movement surveillance which relies upon magnetic sensor technology to improve safety and efficiency of aircraft ground movements. It is basically a German system, developed at Saarland University. Ismael, which one might hope would not have anything to do with white whales, will be used with A-SMGCS, (Advanced Surface Movement Control and Guidance Systems), at major international airports.
The system seems to work well enough, by some mysterious process of 'coating' an aircraft in a magnetic force. The usual problem has arisen however; those who live near airfields will object to such life saving aviation advances and so, tests continue!
