Hi

I have the standard mount for a Garmin 196 but it doesn't fit onto my club PA28-181 as the area behind the control column slopes and the bracket can't be attached.

I've searched online everywhere I can think for a specific bracket but keep coming up blank - I can't use a suction cup mount as it puts the GPS in direct sunlight which overheats it.

I'm thinking surely other people have had this problem - anyone got any solutions to offer?

Try googling garmin yoke mount. I came across a site recently in the US who make different designs for yoke mounts. A call to Garmin UK may also be able to advise.

There is no reason why it should overheat if you put it in the suction mounts. My 496 sits on top of the coming in direct sunlight and never has a problem. The operating range on it is ov er 40C. Just because it feels hot it is not overheating.

Pardon me if I am being stupid but the Garmin 196 I've got fits any old Warrior I've been in with the standard mount. It clamps onto the column, tight behind the yoke. and holds the 196 just forward of the yolk.

I cannot think of a PA-28 of any brand that is different.

When I had a GPS Pilot 111, I just used a bit of velcro to fit it on the coaming and I would have melted if that had got too hot.

Ok if you look at this image you'll see there is not much behind the control column to attached the clamp too - it sort of slants down - believe me i've tried this for ages and simply can't get it to fit - Dave can you tell me how you clamp it? Works fine on a Cessna - maybe i am doing something stupid?:uhoh:

Has anyone submitted a mod form for using the supplied yoke bracket?

It clamps onto the shiny bit of the column (with the screw below the column), immediately behind and tight up against the yoke - yes you can fully pitch nose down without it interfering. The "L" shaped bit of the mounting then comes over the yolk and sits in front of it so the G 196 sits obscuring the word "Cessna". I've only had this a couple of months so maybe there are different sorts ???
