I recently upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 and found that I couldn't get any sound. On having a bit of a rummage I was able to get sound from CD's and music stored on the hard drive. However I cannot get any sound from streaming which I used to be able to do fine before the upgrade.
When I select a streaming source, a radio station say, the window opens and after a brief buffering period it says it's playing and the timer starts but no sound.
I've tried to search extensively on the internet for a solution and although other people seem to have had this problem I have found no answer. The closest answer I could get was to "rollback" to my previous version of WMP (10). I followed the instructions on Microsoft’s website to what appears to be a successful conclusion. But still no streaming audio.
Any ideas
What maybe confusing matters is around the same time I got an icon in the bottom right corner of my screen saying "Local Area Connection 3 - A network cable is unplugged". This is apparently a Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Why this has happened is a mystery (to me at least) and everything else seems to be fine and dandy. Whether this has anything to do with my problem or is a coincidence is for higher beings than me to decide. But I thought I'd throw it in the mix.
If anyone is kind enough to reply then thank you. Could I ask you to write your answer so that a computer hignoramus, such as myself, can understand it.

This one continues to pop up from time to time, MS in there wisdom dropped, or in there terms ‘Deprecated’ support for a number of streaming protocols a little over four years ago, a fact that was well documented at the time but fails to have been picked up on by website owners, result is that sometimes you will get a ‘This Protocol is not supported’ error, sometimes you will just get nothing but silence, and the problem has again surfaced with Vista which apparently will not allow uninstall of WMP, and MS support will be of little help as on the face of it WMP is running as advertised.

And I am sorry there is no quick fix resolution to this one, but if your feeling adventurous try this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932756)

Or as a simpler alternative get yourself a copy of VLC player from here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) set your O/S to use it as default and enjoy streaming in any form or protocol you might stumble across.

As too the Ethernet controller, that’s your embedded chip, the one on your Main board,
Open, Control Panel, System properties, Hardware, Device Manager, and scroll down to your Network adapters. If it is having a problem it will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it, if so right click it, Select ‘Properties’ and read off the problem from the presented page then use the offered trouble shooter to solve it or click the driver tab and either click the ‘Update driver box’ which will look for the latest drivers and install them, or the ‘Roll Back Driver box’ which will replace the faulty one with a copy of the original one.

If this fails go to the website for the Main board and download the latest chipset drivers for there and install them.

First of all Cypherus thanks very much for your reply, I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to reply to you. I didn't follow your adventurous link however I did download the VLC player. Unfortunately no joy and much head scratching. :ugh:

I have just had occasion to move my computer which involved unplugging everything and re-plugging in. On doing so the icon informing me that the ethernet controller was unplugged had disappeared and everything was working just as it had before.

I am still no wiser but at least everything works as before.

A few days ago, I began to notice that all clips I played on the BBC and CNN web-sites were playing without sound.
I had a look on google, and hidden on page 2 was a link to this site...

I tried it and sound came back :D
