One of the miseries of reinstalling Windows is the insecure and tedious wait while it installs 600MB of security updates. But weep no more...

Heise Security have published an article on a DIY Service Pack (Installing Windows updates without an internet connection). Their script downloads the whole megillah to date, and produces an .iso that you burn to CD. The CD autostarts and with its own installation script and the downloaded packages does the whole update in one shot.

"Looking for manageable Windows updates even without an internet connection? Our offline update 3.0 script collection downloads the entire body of updates for Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003 from Microsoft's servers in one fell swoop and then uses them to create patch packages on CD, DVD or USB stick. Those in turn allow you to update as many PCs as desired."

Just make sure that you use v304 (v302 didn't work for me) at
