Can anyone tell me how many 1st Class seats (with conversion to beds) could a B747 be reconfigured to carry?

gonna need a bit more info here ie seat pitch, no. of galleys, seat layout (2-2-2 for example) and do you mean a 742, 743 or 744?

Hi bamcb38c, the aircraft would be a Boeing 747, the seats would be those currently fitted by B.A. in first class and the number of galleys etcetera would be a function of the number of seats, a tall order I know but I hope someone can give me a fairly accurate guesstimate.:confused:

ok maybe i shouldve simplified my ansewer a bit. the 742 743 and 744 i refer to are varients of the same aircraft the 747. as you use BA as your baseline ill assume u mean the 744 as its the only version they currently use. BA's first class seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, so with the existing galley layout id say you'd get roughly 30 rows on the main deck therefore 114 seats (allowing for the taper in A zone) on the upperdeck id suggest a 1-1 layout with 5 rows therefore 10 seats. so in my estimations youd be looking at 124 seats.

Without getting pedantic over it...BA have 14 in their nose sections (A zone) with the galley immediately behind it!

I think Air Partner has a 747-200, which is the only all-VIP 747 available for public charter (the other over 30 VIP 747s are private and not offered for charter, e. g. the two VC-25s.). Their seatmap can be found at flash presentation linked from

They use the nose for couches seating 14 and bar with 6 stools - compare BA with 14 beds in nose - and in the main fuselage, they have 106 or so seats - at 6 abreast and 68 inch pitch. 1-2-1 and fully flat beds would be fewer...

Paddy i think i covered that by saying 'allowing for the taper in azone' and that was included in the calculations.

using BA as a baseline, i was assuming that that aircraft would be a 744 and therefore have a longer upperdeck area (enough for an extra 6 seats) and some sircraft are equipped with a extended upper crew rest area so there would be room for another 2 rows of seats (8). with this in mind 124 seats is a very good estimate. plus seen as there would be no need for all the 744s cargo capacity why not convert the forward frieght bay for extra seating (ive seen a 742 with a bedroom down there so can be done) so you could add another say 24 seats.

without all the cargo handling equiptment (rails and pdus etc) i could stand up ok in it (im 5'10) whereas in a regular cargo bay im struggling. it compares roughly to the upperdeck on a 744 and had more room than below the overhead bins on the upperdeck.
