Kinloss Nimrod Painting

Evening all,

Do any of the Kinloss chaps remember the painting that was done around a year ago of a Nimrod rescue? Not sure when the rescue actually took place but it involved winching a Russian submariner off a sub off the Scottish Coast.

I was telling a friend about it and was looking for some more information on it, can't seem to find anything via google or the web. Does anyone know if there are any prints left?

I have one hanging in the hall and can put you in touch with the artist, he has drawn another called called Superb Rendez Vous featuring the old girl and a Uk sub of the same nameboth are pencil drawings, PM your e-mail and I will forward it to him.:)

Was on that sortie, quite a few years ago in the good old 206 days, still got the original pic in my log book. There are plenty of prints left am sure you'll be put in touch with John at Kinloss or Andy at Waddo.

Hoots - to correct you. You were on the relief aircraft, the actual rescue was completed by 201 Crew 1 in xv254; but as the picture is so good so a little poetic licence is allowed.

Wow! That must be some awesome winch to do that from a 'rod..

(Still, nice to see that p*ssing contests aren't the sole preserve of the C130 fleet.)

You are probably on about the print called 'Helping An Old Friend' which depicts XV230 assisting the rescue of a Russian submariner with appendicitis approx 50 miles NW of Lewis on 29 Feb 1996. Assisted by Helo's from the RAF and Navy, the print from the original pencil drawing by the artist was limited to 500 prints and also signed individually by Brian Burridge. If this is the print you are after you may have problems finding a copy for sale as Andy started selling them at the end of 2004 if memory serves me well.

Would that be a Pegasus engined Nimrod or the tilt wing version?:ok:

Mystic Meg & Sharmine - some rescues involve more than just a winch, this one involved 2 Nimrods, a frigate and 2 RN helos

Is it safe to assume that only one of the RN helo's contributed to the rescue as the other had the obligatory camera crew on board :E

Ahh, I thought this was going to be a thread about the Nimrod that was painted chocolate brown back in the 70s, affectionately nicknamed the flying turd :}

It was 201 that were scrambled initially, but as you remember there was much confusion over the position that a second aircraft, from 206 was sent. The image on the picture shows the scene when 206 were on task. More importantly, the sailor with the appendix problem was taken to stornoway by RN Sea King from Prestwick after initial medical help from the Doctor from HMS Glasgow, who's Lynx can be seen in the Pic with the Sea King. Always remember the conversation on the radio when they russians stated they had stuffed his wound with a tampon. Just as well it was changed days or he would have been stuffed in the freezer.
