Hi
Some time ago I asked for your help ref transposing Video to DVD and you recomended that the easiest way was to use a DVD RECORDER and to do all I want direct.
I have done this but as all of my VCR Tapes are 3hr = 180 min tapes and are recorded in LP to get 6 hrs of films "What Setting do I use on the DVD Recorder" (the recorder I got had different speeds giving different lengths of recording) . Whenever I try to record something in SLP which is supposed to be compatible with LP VCR Tapes ie :360 min it stopes recording after approx 180 min ???
Any advise gratefully accepted.

Except for direct VHS to DVD recording which will normally compress using Mpeg1 or 2 depending on the machine one of hte best way I know too record too DVD is via a Capture card and then use DVD authoring tools to edit and compress as I need too, however in your case trying to cram 360 odd minutes of VHS onto a DVD I do not believe is the right approach as DVD's are so cheap these days better to use more than one, obtain as best a quality as possible and except the task of having to change the DVD half way through.

It is possible to compress the VHS stream by a large amount and with a little editing get it all on a single DVD, but the losses in quality over and above those already exprenced by using the EP recording option might leave you with an unwatchable result.

Anyway , dug this link out for you to look over, loads of information though the site is a little untidy, keep at it the information is there, you just need to locate it.

Which make and model DVD recorder do you have, and what are type of blank disks do you have?

Disks can be bought in single layer format (DVD5) which hold about 4.7Gb/120 mins, and double layer (DVD9) which holds 8.5Gb/240 mins. So, if your recorder supports double layer (DL) disks and recording, go out and buy some. Otherwise you are limited to 120 mins and will have to pause play and swop disks at a suitable point on the tape.

e.g. Blank dual layer DVD+R disks (http://www.dvd-and-media.com/dual-layer-dvdr-media.htm), dual layer DVD-R disks (http://www.dvdshoponline.co.uk/Dual_Layer_DVD_R_Blank_Media.html)

It will help, as Orac says, if you can let us know what make and model recorder that you have.

My (domestic- not PC) Toshiba has a hard drive- invaluable for editing, which is a doddle compared with PC programmes, prior to putting stuff on to a DVD disk. Also, it has a setting that allows it to "record to fit", meaning that it compresses material, allowing longer than the normal LP 4 hours, with a small amount of quality loss, although I haven't noticed it.
