By your detailed description, at a guess, I'd say it sounds like an IL-76

AN-12 could be a good call. I was just thinking jet. Any more clues akubra? (jet / prop; wing or rear mounted engines)

Sorry I was vague...
I live under the approach to Brisbane, like directly under.
By the time I got outside to take a look, all I saw was a large four turbine heavy sinking to the horizon. It had a low horizontal stabilizer and was making a lot of noise and black smoke.
Thats about all I could tell.
Maybe it was the RAAF 707 re fueler if its still flying?

how about taking a run over to the Airport and meet up with the local spotters? ...... I'm sure they will be able to supply the info you require

oh, and be sure to let us know what it was..... :)

could be John Travoltas 707, or the quantas memorial 707.
i belive the RAAF 707s are still flying i think one even went to red flag this year./
