Seems to be a recurring topic on the M&H forum.

For those interested, the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, have recently released this document http://www.sign.ac.uk/pdf/sign97.pdf

Must admit, I havn't read it all yet, but from past experience, they appear to offer a robust opinion on matters relating to health.

I think there will be a shortened version on their website.

If you're really interested in your own cardiovascular risk, go to this site and download the British Heart Foundation risk assessor. I use it all the time in clinical practice. You'll need your blood pressure and full lipid profile:

Of course, I am not then allowed to treat cholesterol to the Joint British Societies target of 4. My patients have to make do with 5, because they live in Britain.
