I know this is true for all of you, but last night this really pi**ed me off.

You can be either awake or asleep, two fixed states of mind.

But there is a third, the in-between moments.

Sleep is a time when the brain can take care of all those menial jobs like understanding what it has experienced that day and storing the thoughts in an appropriate place for future reference. The brain is sometimes far more active when you are asleep than when you are awake.

Your brains storage library is closed during the hours you are awake and everything you do during that time is effectively cached for later processing by the sub concious.

The brain has a defensive barrier between the sub concious activity and the concious.

The brain opens up completely during sleep, the barriers holding back the thoughts that would send you insane if you experienced them when you were conscious come down, but you are asleep so no harm is done.

These weird dreams and ideas pass freely from the sub concious brain into your concious brain that is now dormant.

Psychedelic drugs can break down this barrier and you see what your brain acts like during sleep when you are awake. That is probably why anyone who has taken LSD long term is forever f***ed up.

But there is a transition point where the barrier comes down and you see what your sub concious is like. Its the moment just before you fall asleep, your actually dreaming but your still awake.

These are the most creative times of your life, its the time of ideas, of sudden insight, of deep thought and immense intuition.

I compose music and I always have a Dictaphone near me so I can hum the music that comes to me into it at any time for later reference.

Last night as I was falling asleep, the most amazing symphony came into my mind.

In my half dream state I lay there listening to what was a full orchestra and choir for nearly the full composition which I reckon lasted about 20 minutes. I actually remember saying to myself I should go down stairs and grab the dictaphone and record it, but I thought, Nawww, I will remember it in the morning.

I cant remember a thing, not a single note.

All that I heard is forever locked in my subconscious mind and there is no way to get to it.

This is the usual crap I compose, its all film music and these are the files I submit to the producers, these compositions are going to be in a feature film when they are done properly by a full orchestra, I already have the contract signed :)

The First is a reflective piece.

The Second is semi action.

This one has already been in a film, remember, this was an original demo file and does not reflect the final music quality that was in the finished film.

I think that's called the hypnogogic state and apparently it's the kick-off point for controlled astral travelling. Read a book on the subject once. Could be rather useful for checking out that tasty blonde neighbour at bath time.
