Strange one this…….when I boot up my PC sometimes I get a continuous tone from the computer. This does not match any of the diagnostic beeps in the motherboard manual. The PC boots up okay, but when I run a couple of utilities to look at CPU temperature etc they both show the CPU temp as being around 3C and the case temperature being around 1C. The PC functions as normal. The continuous tone stops for a while and then comes back – this goes on for hours if I leave the PC powered up. All fan speeds are normal.

Rebooting usually gets rid of the tone and then CPU and case temperatures are normal, around 40C for the CPU and 25C for the case. The PC then runs all day without any tone appearing.

I’ve had the case panels off and I can’t work out which component is producing this tone noise. It’s a 3 year old self build with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor and a Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 motherboard. Any ideas?

I'm using a Dell Laptop here in Mandurah, Australia. Today the patio temperature has been 32C. My Laptop monitor has shown 64C (CPU) as a maximum and is 56C most of the time. Hard drive temp. has been 46C all day. The computer has been on for 13 hours.

This from years ago may just serve to jog a memory. Perhaps some parallels. But you built this one, so can't be that kind of problem...can it? ;)

Thanks for the responses - have checked everything for secure connections inside the case and hoovered away rather a lot of dirt and dust. Problem - whatever caused it - has not occurred for two days so fingers crossed!
