ORAC is clearing shelves at home, as his Madrid stuff will be arriving soon, prior to disappearing to offshore parts again.
In blowing dust off books various one has found a book which might interest someone of a current or previous naval bent, so to speak, and with a historical interest. It is a 1910 edition of "Deeds of Naval Daring - Anecdotes of the British Navy" by Admiral Edward Giffard..
Contents begin with:
Bellona and Courageax
Admiral Hopson
Captain Seth Jermy
Death of Sir Richard Grenville
Captain Faulknor at Port Royal
and so on for a total of over 90 anecdotes...
All good stirring stuff.
It has a nice inscription to a Leslie Rider on the occasion of his 14th birthday on March 16th 1911. That would have made him 18 just after the start of the Great War. I wonder what became of him....
Whatever. If someone knows of a good home for this book, and would like to promise to make a payment to the BF or another suitable miltary charity, I will send it on its way....
