Have posted this separately on purpose...

Does anyone have a view on getting the JAA MEP done in the US whilst hour building? Would you say it leads to problems doing the CPL back in the UK afterwards? If not, perhaps I should do the CPL in a JAR school there too?

Cheers all!:ok:

I did mine at Naples and it was no problems at all.

Not only does it cost half as much as the UK but also saves a fortune in landing fees.

You could do the FAA Commercial then convert either in the UK or at one of the schools in Florida or back in the UK. There is no prerequisit of hours required for the conversion, its merely stated 'as required'.

I would suggest if you do them back to back then there would be no rustiness and you would potentially be able to do the CAA checkride without any further instruction.

So 2 MEP licences, less than the cost of a CAA one done in the UK. No weather issues.

Seems a simple choice to me.

I think it is a great idea to save money, although if you are going to do a multi IR and haven't done it yet, it would probably be helpful to do the MEP and the IR on the same aircraft type, just to save any time finding your way around a new aeroplane....

I did the multi and IR first and it was fine doing the CPL afterwards - I was probably more relaxed going into the CPL actually as I had the IR out of the way which was the one I was most worried about.

Section F, part 3 of LASORS describes the MEP (Land) requirements. Read it
www.caa.co.uk/lasors
Standards Document 31 is a list of CAA-approved FTOs containing those who are eligible to provide JAA MEP ratings. Again read, you should be able to spot the US businesses.
http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/SRG_FCL_APPROVEDFTOS.PDF
This also lists those US schools providing CPL courses (JAA, approved for issue by CAA)

Given the prices, why not do it in the US if you are already there and have the relevant visa for training?
