Hmm well lets say I won't be holding my breath for any RFIs anytime soon.
Having had a look on the RAF Careers website in the job search section, going to the officer job search, every single job listed there is annotated as 'urgently needed'. What are the odds on all the various officer jobs getting an RFI then? I think the phrase is "you have 2 hopes ......" But if all the branches are in the same parlous state, who and how would they decide which branches got the FRIs (aircrew aside)? Would they offer them on a sliding scale for different branches?
Unfortunately I think we are getting to the stage that what ever RFI is offered will only be a short term solution. An awful lot of people I know have said that the MOD couldn't afford the level of RFI that would be required to keep them in. As for me, if it's offered (unlikely) I'll take it - after all they have me by the pension short and curlies, so why not take free money?:ok:

Either way, I'd be surprised if there was an RAF-wide FRI, but it doesn't make pretty reading to see so many jobs flagged as urgently needed. I guess it's a sign of being stretched but not overstretched! Yes they are urgently needed ..... now, not in 2-5 yrs when the recruiting cycle has churned someone out of professional trg

Doesn't that really grip your $hite. C'mon chaps, you must know at least a few BEngOs who, like me, have done their 6 year SSC and are forced to leave, despite wanting to remain in the Air Force they love - all because OASC in their wisdom played a lottery for SSCs and PCs for ground branches. Having to leave on a SSC was bad enough, seeing some of the incompetent gits with PCs staying in was harder, learning that the only JO Eng's with SSCs getting offered extensions have bumpy jumpers makes you suspicious but to then learn that the recruiters are still having the gall to say we are desperate for engineers... :ugh:


really made my monday that. Civvy st. bah, 6 grand pay-cut and treated like a mushroom.

The grass is not always greener - remember that if you have of choice of jumping ship or not.

Oh go on then Buoy, I'll bite - I've got nothing better to do for the next 15 minutes before dinner is finished being cremated.

I understand why the FRIs to date have been targeted towards pilots and the odd bit of talking freight that can string a sentence together. However, only the most obtuse would fail to realise that retention is now a problem across the RAF as a whole and as such it may be time to extend the FRIs to other branches. Without the 'blunties' you describe, your ac isn't going anywhere, so when they all disappear, I hope you're good at changing engines.

Oh and just in case you are one of the few - that is one the exceptionally obtuse few - a warning; the RAF in 20+ yrs will belong to blunties and 13 yd old Playstation professionals. As long as the bean counters have their way, crew in the cockpits will be phased out in favour of a datalink and a box of servos..... you won't always need aircrew to project air power.

And by the way, I never said what I did - how do you know my job isn't on the list of 'urgently needed'? Now run along there's a good chap and fetch my Big Mac - and yes I will have fries with it:E

Have been hearing rumours around the bazaars that an FRI 3 is in the offing.....targetted at Sqn Ldr level of Aircrew and amounting to £100,000 (after tax!) for 5 years return of service.

Anyone one else heard that one?

Seems a little devisive and not too well targetted, although apparently many people are leaving as Sqn Ldrs at their 38/16 point and not loyally signing on to 55, so we are running short of SO2's - and the higher powers are surprised at that?
