MP3 Question

Just discovered I can copy or rip tracks from a CD into Media Player Library is it possible to shorten such tracks? ie stop the ripping process half way through,the reason I ask is I have some first class backing tracks for Dire Straits stuff,trouble some of em are a tad long to play as a instrumental.
I think they are audio files not MP3.
