Hi all,

I tried to search the forum and the whole net but noone seems to have answered this question before.

I was just looking at the pictures of the first two F-16 delivered to the Polish Air Force, yesterday (thursday)... this is the link:

The pilot you see on pictures number 8 and 9 is Mike Meyer and can't figure out why he is wearing glasses. I was always told military pilots must have perfect sight and those wearing glasses/contacts are not allowed into the air force as pilots... can anyone explain this to me??
Is he just wearing some kind of special glasses??

Thanks.

Best Wishes.

Just realized that i made a huge mistake writing "sunglasses" in the title. Of course I am not referring to sunglasses but to prescription glasses. The f-16 pilot on the picture is wearing PRESCRIPTION GLASSES. That's what my question is about. Sorry for the mistake.

A fair few front line aircrew wear glasses. As long as eyesight can be corrected within certain limits, and certain frames are used (in the uk at least) then it's ok.

The new prescription canopy on the Eurofighter helps a lot too!

Generally, eyesight has to be up to strict limits at entry but can deteriorate thereafter and still be acceptable.

Agree with backround noise's post. Having spent a substantial amount training a pilot, as long as the correction is reasonable and manageable, glasses are ok

Also, intake needs play a role in that when there are few cockpits to fill, selections' are more so, when jets are sitting empty, minor exceptions are much more common.

Can people start using bigger fonts please.

Us older aviators will be able to read these posts much easier.

Now where did I park me cab then?

They could, of course, be photo-chromic sunglasses after all and he is trying to look 'cool'.:)

He's probably Spec-Aircrew! (sorry)
