Greetings, i am seeking advice, as ever.

My partner is joining up come the new year as an intelligence officer. She will be out of Cranwell next Autumn, and im hoping that you may be able to shed some light on accurate timeframes, and hold if there are any in int?

And where is most likely as a first posting, is it a front line unit, or more likely something bunker'y? Im due out of phase 4 at a similar time to her finishing professional training, so have a view to co location.

I have tried searching the forums, and also looking through the intranet at work, but to no avail.

Thought id ask for advice, pm if you can help, many thanks in advance.

Without wishing to play Devil's advocate too much, I think in the long run the IntOs will have the last laugh.

Long before aircrew, there were spies and int-types - they arrived just after the first prostitue I believe .... after all it is the second oldest profession. And long after aircrew have gone the way of the Dodo and been replaced by the Playstation controller toting 12 yr old, the IntOs will still be around. We will always need people to work out what's on the other side of the hill, but we won't always need aircrew to do something about it :E

Unfortunately that website's information is rather out of date....there are a lot of varied areas of employment for OS (Int) officers but clearly the main focus is the provision of current air int to deployed forces. The JO cadre is under significant pressure as the OOA deployment rate is one 4 month det every other year, on top of whatever FU dets they have participated in. (Something like 25 concurrent dets for a cadre of 140ish JOs - not all of which are available to deploy). This is not a sustainable situation and steps are being to reduce the pressure where possible.

There is likely to be a hold prior to the JAIC (Joint Air Int Cse) although the reduction in throughput of students this year might well reduce this. Likely first tours include the AWC, one of the Stn Int Cells as deputy to the Stn Int O and JARIC. There is now a CR programme to be met during the first tour and passing this is not a foregone conclusion. There are a couple of JO posts in the bunkers at STC and PJHQ but these are not ideal for first tourists.

It's a challenging job and you can expect her to spend a lot of time away on ops and exercises!

Without getting into details here, it would be unusual for a brand new baby IntO not to go to the AWC for their first tour to consolidate on the skills picked up on the JAIC.

Very few, will go to Stations first off and none to sqns which has more or less become a 2nd tourist + job whilst the other tours are now considered 2nd-3rd tour specialist jobs.

However, I do agree that the various websites are well out of date and are a pretty poor representation of reality.

I thought this was going to be another wind up on how the RAF are more intelligent that the other services.

I'm disappointed now. I was all ready to say that due to the short hours* the RAF have, it is far easier for them to concentrate .:}

But that's all wasted now, and I won't say it.

*Of course someone would have pointed out just how stretched you all are in stupidly hot places, to which I would have surely replied "Well stop wasting time, and get back to work!":rolleyes:

les - you say 'your partner'. Unless you have a Civil Partnership or a marriage, forget the RAF treating you two as an item. Co-location is something married people seem to be able to do for about 50% of their time, unless one of them accepts a less promotable role out of it all. Non-formal relationships don't exist and therefore anything you get will be more luck than judgement.

Does anyone remember Spike Milligan, " Intelligence speaking " !I did two tours in Aldergrove in the Int. Cell in the early 80's. Being the witty little shiite I am I started answering the phone "Duhhhh, Intelligence" and great merriment ensued throughout the province... After a week or two this was becoming a bit of a habit and one day I answered the phone in this manner only to receive a curt "Airborne! My office" from my Sqn. Cdr. Five minutes later and with a one way chat under my belt I was back in the Int. Cell... :uhoh:

Roll forward a couple of days. Seventeen hours into a 24 hour shift so it's very, very late-o-clock and the phone rings... "Duhhh, Intelligence..." was responded to with... "FFS Airborne, my office AGAIN!!!!"...

That "chat" broke the habit... :}
