MOD admit zapping cars

MOD has admitted the Neatishead T93 is/was responsible for zapping peoples´cars. The Times: It is supposed to spot enemy fighters - not zap the electrics of passing cars (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,174-2435498,00.html)

T93 always has been a very, very, dirty radar, though I remember the 200yd RADHAZ for civilians, and 100yds for servicemen was a bit of a joke. We always put it down to the lead lining in the No2 trousers.....

If you think that's bad you should have seen a T85 in high power! Ohh, I did. I was the MC for the very, very, last time it was used.

The Spams had ther EC24 across to do some trials, and since it was the last day of the T85 I managed to persuade 11Gp to let use every thing it had. We managed to get 10 out of the 12 Tx on line through 6 horns, full frequency hopping, the lot. The EC24 sat on a N-S track 60 miles off the coast and asked for the jamming grade - zero - zero - zero - zero.

We then asked him if he had anything to report. There was a short pause, then he replied, "Well, we think the paint is coming off the outside of the aircraft"..

Five minutes after he was off task the radar was switched off. ten minutes later the engineers were smashing valves and glass work with axes and cutting through cables. We´d got it turned back on so often they had explicit instructions that, this time, it was to be irrecoverable.... :{

Don't think it is at Neatishead - most probably Trimingham. Not even certain it's a T93 - replaced by a different model around 1997/1998. Please feel free to correct me!

Both the cars mentioned are Nissans.

I had a Nissan Terrano and the dashboard failed as well. But this is nothing to do with passing radar stations, it is listed as a known fault on Nissan cars.

The LCD display flashes off/on, the needles go up and down etc. etc. And when you take it to the dealers they go "oh, another one" and swap the electronics out.

Sopley was T80, (ex Wartling I think) and it didn't do a lot of good to the guy who went up to paint the scanner with the Tx still switched on either.

Don't know about Neat, but, while at Linton and on a raz over the North York Moors on our freshly purchased motorbikes, me and a mate both had the immobilisers kick in, surprisingly close to a certain large radar type facility around there.

Back in the early 70s, I can recall a neighbour on 84Sqn mentioning that his brand-new duty-free SAAB 99 would often 'cough' whenever he drove past the aerial farm approaching Akrotiri. He was convinced that it was some form of radiation upsetting the car's ECU. The majority of cars back then were still fitted with mechanical 'points' to trigger the ignition, so were not affected, but ECUs were just beginning to appear on some vehicles.

Over the two years I was there, a couple of trees on the perimeter slowly died off too.

Aeronut - The Locking RADAR by 3T block was the T101 before it moved to Cosford. Predating that, by some years, was the "nodding horror" or ANFPS6 which we used to point at the TCs in 1T block. Well we had to do something to restrict their uncontrolled spread.

Spekesoftly - (Strange spelling, L24 perhaps?) I had a mate with the same car, same timeframe, based at Troodos whose engine would not just cough but actually cut out. It was a 30mph limit IIRC and he had to do nearer 40 to coast through it. He was pulled by the speed police and gave them a demo but they were still considering doing him when the turks invaded and it all got forgotten about. Every cloud etc but it meant that there was no follow up with SAAB to identify the cause.

I had a mate with the same car, same timeframe, based at Troodos whose engine would not just cough but actually cut out. The T84 at Troodos in the dome? The only road went to the site (OK, the Cypriot Tx on the next hilltop as well.) What was he coasting through?

I have been chased down the road from the top site by ball lightning though, IIRC I did just a little bit more than 40MPH on the way down.

I never saw a speed trap off the SBA during my tour, which is a pity because meeting a local coming around the corner on the wrong side of the road on 2 wheels - trying to get to Limassol with snow still on the car - strained the patience as well as the underwear.....

Radar Domes .... now you have me wondering ... :confused:

Now I can't say my car problem relates to parking it beside a Dome but from time to time I have taken the doggie up onto the hills around me and I park right beside the dome in the photo below ......

here are the car symptoms ....

Car has an alarm (with key fob) that opens all doors when deactivating the alarm .... i.e. fairly standard setup .... I always use the key Fob to switch alarm off/open all doors when starting off on my journey .....

It works perfectly all summer but as soon as the temp drops ..... first and every frosty morning this happens .....

1st thing on a cold morning ..... alarm switches off ok .... all doors unlock ok .... and immediately all doors re-lock

only way I can open front doors is to use key on each door ....

only way I can open back doors is to press the inside unlock button after getting in the front door(s) ......

so ....... off I go on my journey ..... car warms up .... 10 minutes later or so as I drive along all the doors I didn't bother to unlock (with the key or inside button) suddenly unlock .... don't worry, they don't open .... just unlock (as both the cabin temp or engine compartment temp rises) ....

I've also noticed that once inside and the key turned in the steering lock, all dials swing immediately full scale and then settle back to a normal position (even the speedo) .... again, only on really cold mornings ....car starts normally ...

I called a couple of Garages ..... they don't believe it but hint it's going to cost me a Bundle :(

I was on the Isle of Wight in 1982 getting trained on the AR3D in prep for a det to the Falklands (Cape Orford, Cara Cara Radar). We could only use about 40 deg of live sector because the first time they turned it on all the cash registers in the local supermarkets went nuts.

Yes the FBI is open, newly refurbished but still up to the usual standards of service i.e crap.
