New baggage restriction 23kg per piece

Nothing to do with security - just HSE/industry guidelines.

Have just heard from a reliable source, that industry agreement is imminent, to restrict checked in baggage to 23kg per piece. Nothing to do with airline baggage allowances, just reducing the current 32kg/pce maximum to 23kg from 31 Oct 2007. Great news for loaders! :}

Cannot agree with you there, many of the EU destinations you refer to have security that is at best only haphazard and falls well below the UK standards which also is inconsistent.

I'd be worried about a 23kg limit. Took bike back yesterday from BSL, and with clothes in box, came to 29kg. My bike is pretty light (about 11kg), admittedly the box was cumbersome, but it was all the shop had to rent.

I would expect such a limit to pose a serious problem for mountain bikers - not sure about other sports equipment, but I think there is a clear HSE challenge here between legitimate needs to protect handling staff, and desires of sports people, who the government are supposed to be encouraging!

For example I can take 50kg with KLM, yes not in 1 bag of course but usually more than 30kg. So no change but I can take 3 bags?
23 + 23 + 4kg?

The current bagage handlers back limit I think is 32.4kg.

Laughable. More of a threat comes from the people who work at the airports. Who services the aircraft and who are those working in airside shops just how many get a 100% daily check and what about the tons of goods delivered to those shops,

Last week a friend took Air Canada LHR~YYZ and was told 2 x 23kg. If a bag is 23~29kg then a fee is charged and over 32kg it will be refused. So, take two lightly loaded bags and you can have 46kg total - and on a Y ticket!

There were variations depending upon where the journey originated but this was starting from LON.

2. Will these also affect UK flights? I mean, will small amounts of liquids, toothpastes etc. hence be allowed?

As a pax I would agree that 23Kg is quite ridiculous, but as I'm also a baggage hander trying to lift 32Kg bags in holds such as 737 during a fast 25min turnround is awkward. At my station 3 guys in last few month have put their back out lifting heavy bags in an awkward position.

I'm sure there is some compromise that can be made 28Kg perhaps? 23 is a bit small, although would make life a bit easier, just gotta cram them in a bit tighter!

Hence BA's new baggage policy...and you were all so quick to condemn them for doing something which all the others will have to do in the end.There are still aspects of BA's new baggage policy which are stupid, for example the ridiculous approach to excess baggage charges which means that 23 kg = OK, but 24 kg = £120 charge because each excess bag is charged by piece count irrespective of how little or light the bag is.
