Until very recently a rather mucky 707 in the colours of the Republic of Zaire graced the grass in front of the old control tower at LPPT. It has now gone. Anyone know what has happened to it?

Chopped up and scrapped over the last couple of weeks. I believe there are pictures of it on airliners.net.

For anyone intrested there is a 707 at Southend should be flying out in the next few months

Hopefully flying out within the next two week or so.
Should have engine runs by the end of the month then some air tests to take place before this aircraft departs all being well to its new home Australia.:ok: :ok:

Quite a few considering their age and (surely) high cycles:
Airlines I know to still operate them:
Skymaster
SAHA Air
BETA Cargo
Trans Med Airlines (still solvent ?)
Sudan Cargo
Air forces from much of Europe, including the UK, and many South American Countries and the US and Australia are still flying many of the mil-spec versions of these old birds.
It is interesting to note that the 707s major competitor, the DC-8 remains flying with Cygnus, UPS, DHL, BETA Cargo,Skymaster,ATI,Airborne, BA Global, United Arab Airlines, Arrow Air and Murray Air to this day. The remaining DC-8s are more numerous than the 707s - the DC-8 Super series of that aircraft were built much later into the 60s and even 70s.
