View Full Version : Upper age Limit WSO(Nav)

Does anyone know the upper age limit for WSO(Nav) for serving ex NCA and if they bother to apply it. I know of a few NCA cross-overs to pilots who were over the upper age limit but who still got accepted. I have heard that once you're in and can give the required 'return of service', the upper limits aren't really taken that seriously anyway.

With the new legislation, there should be no upper age limit. Look forward to 59 year old JPs and JNs on the sqns!

I know of an FC who jumped to Nav quite late on. I believe he had come to the end of his existing commission and agreed to stay only if he could go Nav. ISTR he went through the whole course and when I last spoke to him he was on F3s. He must have been in his mid-late 30s when he entered Nav trg - he had previous air experience on E-3s, but I don't see why this would be much different to service as, say, an AEO on Nimrods.

Of course going from NCA, you would need to be re-programmed at Sleaford Tech, adding 6 months or so, but I would suggest that there are cases out there. You may get some pointers on here, but you really need to talk to PMA about the options and current limitations.

If it's what you want, go for it and best of luck to you. However, I am assuming you are currently NCA - if, on the other hand, someone is suggesting you go NCA as a route to WSO(Nav) beware ... you won't be the first to be caught out.

If it helps, I applied for NCA to GD/N at 27, started IOT at 28 and Brevet'd at 30. I'm sure those ages are above the notional age limits. Feel free to PM me if you want more details...

Why Nav by the way? Sitting in the back of a GR4 has to be one of the best jobs in the RAF, but why not the front seat? Are you a confirmed club fisted tw*t? Unless there is a specific reason, let the OASC do the selection.

I don't think so ......

PA MACR £52k and change after band 20
PA Flt Lt Nav £62k and change after band 30

both based on 2005 pay settlement. Pension details can be taken from MOD pension calculator.

It's 40. I would be very surprised if they don't dripfeed Nav's onto PA to keep experience on the GR4 amongst others. However they seem to be offering most folks extensions which is not good for morale.

I believe it has become almost dead man' shoes for NCA PA as well.

Yes they are still training Navigators.
