Looking for thoughts on converting to a rotary wing CPL from an ATPL fixed wing in OZ.

I am aware that there is more & more rotary flight jobs about than there has ever been but it's still quite a 'closed' fraternity & somewhat difficult to get into. At a PPL level do flying schools allow private hire of some of the light heli's to an outsider that didn't learn with them in the first place?

.......all just an interest at this stage seeing as I ain't a spring chicken anymore:-)
