View Full Version : Too much porn in the RN?

Did anyone see the article yesterday regarding a junior RN vicar/padre claiming unfair/constructive dismissal because he couldn't escape from porn below decks?

My heart goes out to all the sailors that don't have access to the interweb in their bunks!

The guy is an ex-Copper (left following tribunal and compensation). Wife is a litigation lawyer who specialises in tribunal cases. You work it out.

Suitcase full of money to another no-mark, I hope he chokes on it.

There should have been a lot more bishop-bashing going on before this got to a tribunal. Silly man - as soon as the matelots spotted the weakness (ie his inability to breathe and think at the same time), they took the mickey and wound him up. I hope his parishioners are seeing him for the pathetic little crud-licker he patently is, and are aware of the dangers of crossing or upsetting him. I wonder if he can take God to a tribunal?

I suspect it may be God taking him to a 'tribunal' sooner or later!

I take it he has failed the 'Tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness' part of being a vicar then...

Rather than hang around and try to address the 'moral weaknesses' of the poor sex-starved sailors, he chose to run away. Wonder what his views on poverty, war and the like are? Will he run away from those as well if he finds the whole thing distasteful?

Does sound like the RN is better off without him.

A pity, because I always found RN vicars to be superb. Very good at moving seamlessly and discretely between wardroom, messes and messdecks. Unlike their Army and RAF counterparts they have no officer's rank/badges - their cap badge is specific to the Chaplain's branch. Jack used to think quite a lot of most of them.

Sounds like this one has been trained to look for the compensation cheque by his Mrs.

I'm really disappionted with this bish's reaction.

As a girl in this environment I have no probs with the guys watching as standard matelot entertainment!

I think everyone has gone far to extreme on the pc front!

As "Steve the Shaman", aka Fr Steve Gallagher, our village Vicar says:"If you lot don't want to come to me, fine, I'll come to you".

Hence his appearance in the village pub every Sunday evening for a couple of pints and a natter.

Something about treating people and situations as you find them?

Chaplain's payout over Navy porn

Mark Sharpe left HMS Albion after two weeks
A naval chaplain has won compensation from the Ministry of Defence after claiming sexual harassment aboard two Royal Navy warships.
The Rev Mark Sharpe, 37, of Hanley Rectory, Broad Heath, Worcestershire, said he had to leave because of pornography shown on board.

An undisclosed compensation sum was agreed at a Devon employment tribunal.

The Navy admitted sexual harassment but denied a claim of discrimination on religious grounds.

'Offensive and illegal'

The tribunal In Exeter heard that the chaplain started an Initial Sea Training course on assault ship HMS Albion in June 2004 but left after less than two weeks.

Mr Sharpe, a former police officer, said the main reason was the constant and public use of hardcore pornography and talk about sex among the course students on board.

He said he complained to the course staff but he was told "you need to learn to live with it".

He joined destroyer HMS Manchester in September 2004, leaving three weeks later after complaining of "offensive and illegal" porn DVDs shown on board.

He made formal complaints after leaving the ship.

'Lessons learned'

During the tribunal, the Navy claimed Mr Sharpe only raised complaints about pornography when he had decided to leave the service, for the reason that he was missing his wife and home.

After the settlement was reached, the MoD said the Admiralty Board had accepted that he was exposed to a degree of sexual harassment and an apology was given.

"The Royal Navy does not tolerate harassment or discrimination in any form.

"Lessons have been learned from Reverend Sharpe's case and a number of actions are being taken, including a review of the regulations on pornography."

The MoD would not comment on the details of the settlement

The undisclosed sum was a lot less than the MOD expected to lose overall, which is pretty amusing - I wonder if he knew what he could have made if he had the balls to stick it to the end. Then again, not renowned for seeing things through to their natural conclusion is our Mr Sharpe. Expect to see the idiot in the papers on Sunday, making up the difference. Not bad for a homophobic ex-Copper-turned-padre who has made a bit of a career out of compensation culture.

He would have made a very, very poor padre, was more concerned about his rank (considering Naval padres are, in effect, rankless), and was unable to admit he made a mistake in joining the Service. Apparently "discrimination" also includes pointing out that they guy was a waste of victuals, and rather then being scared about being thrown over the side (please! what a prat!), he could have done us all a favour and float-tested himself in the Bay of Biscay.

Update - he is now suing the Army for.....not letting him join up. Claiming victimisation.

And....he has been suspended from his current job for failing to attend. At a funeral.

What a superstar - if people were unsure of his lack of moral fibre and cash-grabbing motives, they are sure now!

http://www.shropshirestar.co.uk/2006/10/churches-in-vicar-crisis/ - and a lawyer is offering his services to the diocese for free to "resolve" the matter. Welcome to your cardboard box, Mr Sharpe!

Missed this one earlier. He quit during IST? That means that he must have been at Dartmouth barely any time at all as they only do a short course in the first place. Sounds like this fella is the sort the RN can do without!

It's only harrassment if you don't enjoy it!:p

He was going out of his way to be offended. Also wanted to be a Padre in a world of Mr Men, failing to realise that if Jack spots a chink in the armour, then he will very quickly get a crowbar in there.

I can only have sympathy for the poor man now. He seems to be using the courts as a form of therapy. He should be quietly taken away and shown how to make raffia work baskets and leave the real world in peace.

(However, If he succeeds against the Army I will be taking the RFU to court over their ommiting me from representative rugby over the past 20 years!)

In September, Mr Sharpe, 37, of Broad Heath, Tenbury Wells, received an undisclosed pay-out from the Ministry of Defence after taking it to an employment tribunal for sexual harassment and discrimination. The former police officer objected to the use of hardcore pornography.
Did he also sue the Police Force of which he was a member?

It would appear that he is failed copper, compensation paid, failed RN Padre, Compensation paid, failed army applicant, compensation applied for , failed village vicar - watch out for compensation application.... he should be made to pay any previous compensation back as he seems to be a serial failure and litigant!

Yep - sued them for compensation as part of an injury he received in the line of duty. Paper cut or something. Obviously open his (and his wife's) eyes to the routines of demanding something for nothing. Scum, hope he spends it all on a diving holiday and gets a defective regulator.
