I personally couldn't believe that this item was legit. The seller asked for £320 on "buy it now" but after 29 bids it auctioned for £400.

Is this too good to be true or have I been a cynical fool by not bidding and missing a corker? The seller had "0" feedback rating and the item location read "free shipping, United Kingdom".

If you're the winning bidder I'd really like to know how you got on.

he is probably ripping his eyes out and vowing to destroy the Internet.

Ahaa...

I see the item listing has now been removed by ebay. The above link now shows:

"This listing (#260027202420) has been removed or is no longer available."

Very suspicious.

It is a scam. Often happens with GPS units and usually originates in Singapore or similar

these are a scam and they are originating from all countries now, most have an email address which they say to contact first to get your bid approved or to get the buy it now price, they then tell you that they wont sell outside ebay and ask for your ebay username and they will send you an ebay invoice for "peac of mind and security" these invoices are dresed up to look like original ebay pages, they then ask for a western union transfer and that will be that

2 years ago a friend of mine bought what he thought was a lovely new GPS on ebay.
He paid the agreed price but it never arrived.
Don't think he got his money back.

It's a shame that the few bad people out there destroy one's faith in humanity but we now get it everywhere.

Nigerian bankers with millions in the account of an alleged long lost relative (of mine) regularly try to give me large sums of cash and banks with whom I have never held an account request account security verification details by email on a daily basis.
As well as all the penis enlargement/Viagra stuff that I get every day.
How thick do they think we are?
Sad age we live in.

Allowing for loss of context, this has to be a brilliant thread drift!

probably best to contact me direct as i wouldn't want to turn PPRUNE into an offshoot of eBay
however , Roy at Harry Mendelssohn (who's getting my new 496) reckons it will go for about £400 plus. Too early to tell as I've only just posted it. And yes it can be viewed first at my London office or Waltham. Cash accepted:E

People should not knock Ebay. It is a great service. There are a few things to watch though:

When buying:

Unless the item is so cheap you don't care, always buy from somebody with lots of feedback, say 1000+ transactions, and 99% or better good. There are loads of Ebay traders in the far east who are brilliant.

The thing to watch when buying from outside the EU is that you are responsible for import duty and VAT, plus any handling charges which the shipping company chooses to add for processing the other charges! A lot of stuff on Ebay is in fact competitive only on the basis that the package slips through Customs undetected. The far east traders know this and many will gift-wrap stuff so it looks authentic. By all means take a chance on this but remember that occassionally you will get caught and will have to pay 20-30% or so extra.

Most vendors (unsuprisingly) will wait to see your feedback on them before they give you theirs, so think twice before angrily posting bad feedback. Always try to communicate directly a few times before giving up and giving a vendor bad feedback, because if you do that he will give you bad feedback too and then you will find it hard to sell stuff on Ebay.

When selling:

Describe the item honestly, in detail, and with good close-up photos (yes photos cost a bit of money to put up but they are worth every penny). Write properly, with proper grammar and spelling (if you are a recent victim of British education, get somebody else to write it for you). Fully describe any known faults and list all items (e.g. if the user manual is missing, say so). Give URLs to any product reviews on the web. Doing all this makes it very hard for somebody to give you bad feedback. I have sold avionics for US$ 1500+ on Ebay without a hitch.

I would think hard about buying an expensive item from somebody with zero or little history, but one can read the person's writing and get an idea. If they can barely write and describe the item casually, steer away because attitudes are very obviously reflected in writing style. Clever and educated conmen do exist but are very rare. In any event, ask for more details and pictures and the manner in which that communication is conducted will tell you volumes about the person's character. Many people are almost illiterate and come across as not giving a t0ss and they are easily spotted and avoided, and the converse is also true.

Buying and selling lots of small items is what Ebay excells at. I have just bought a new blade for an electric shaver; saved me lots of time hunting around shaver spares shops. This way you build up a nice clean trading history! Ebay is also great for offloading unwanted electronic/IR gear; you get a lot more than one used to get in the secondhand camera shop.

Neither does anyone else logging on here. I will let the above the 'ad' go for now but please note, any more 'links' to items on ebay will be removed.

I know it's been said before but it's a scam, I looked into buying one of these a month or so ago, and by chance the person selling it said he was based in London near where I lived. So I emailed them asking if I could pick it up and pay cash rather than delivery, But I was told no I had to send the money by western union and it had to be delivered. I asked twice if I could collect it as I was only down the road, but they insisted I had to pay by western union to the point they told me I MUST complete the deal.. I told them F*** off.. needless to say that was that... Big scam...

Ps I've got one for sale, but you must pay be Western union and its only £250 and no collection...:) :) Only kidding
