Hi guys,
Since my AIB is finally upon me can anyone give me some last minute pointers?
The board was changed slightly a couple of years ago with such things as doing away with the head teacher. So if anyone has sat at the board since then and can provide me with them last minute pearls of wisdom i would be most greatful! As always i will keep you posted on my progress as i did with FATs.

Regretfully I sat my AIB in May 1988...and then again May 1989...so it might be dated.

Advice I was given back then -

1. don't bull**** a professional bull****ter, they see it every batch.

2. believe in yourself but also believe in your team. AIB aren't after successful dictators.....even if the team exercise stuff's up, they will look to see if you have led your team, guided, supported and listened to your team in order to make your decision...

3. enjoy it.

The lack of the headmaster won't make any difference to the board's objectives.

They want to see rounded, intelligent people who can think a problem through, explain their thinking, come to a conclusion/plan, and show that they can lead others to execute the plan.

The group discussion phase is hard - either if the group is full of bright guys who all want to get their ideas across, or if the others are numpties who haven't got their head round the problem(s). My advise would be to stay on the cool side for the first 25% of the time allocated until you've worked out where each of the others is coming from. Then up your involvement to get your ideas into the mix.

You will also have to have the answers to the awkward questions, and show that you've done your homework on the Service.

Make sure you keep your voice up at all times (apart from the rests and in the Cocked Hat ;)). During the Group Planning, make sure you are constantly giving useful ideas (not spewing sh*te). If anyone else is quiet, ask them what their view is. During the PLT, if you bugger it up, don't just sit there and wait for the time to run out, try and rectify the problem. I made a complete tits up- I got my whole team to the other side, and then realised that I had forgotten the equipment; an oil barrel and a petrol can, so I immediately started building a bridge back again. They obviously didn't mind too much, as I passed. And don't drink too much- I know what you sailors are like:p. Get socialising in the common room as soon as everyone starts arriving. And last but definitely not least, give it your all.

Hi there,

I've been invited to the AIB (after somehow getting through the FATs at Cranwell - now there's a bunch of tests you don't want to sit every day) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how best to prepare. I have a few ideas already, but would really welcome any suggestions.

I went through mine June 2006. When you do your group planning exercise, one of the board will then ask you and the other candidates in your syndicate questions about your plan. You'll probably get about 5 or six direct questions each. However, if one of your fellow candidates incorrectly answers or doesn't know the answer the question is passed over to someone else. So the idea is even when your not the one being questioned, still be thinking of the answer, its alot easier to do when the pressure is off so to speak.

Also don't worry if everything seems to be falling apart during your Practical Leadership Tasks, just keep going to the bitter end! I remember the RM Warrant Officer bellowing at me "Number 3 get your team to do what you want them to do, not what they want to do!" At that stage I was convinced it was all over! Alas somehow i passed.

I passed my AIB very recently - if there's anything specific you're unsure of feel free to ask, I can't promise to have an answer to everything but I'll do my best.


As far as general advice goes, just try and enjoy it - and make sure you take the time to get to know the other candidates.
The bleep test, service knowledge and psychometric tests can all be prepared for fairly easily and so are potentially 'easy marks' (maybe not exactly 'easy', but you can improve your chances significantly).
The biggest thing with the PLT - aside from making sure everyone can hear you - is when you are making your plan try to anticipate where you might have problems and come up with some alternatives for those areas.
The interview is similar to any job interview you might go to - just think about what they might ask (along the lines of the questionnaire they send you) and be honest.

There are also several guides/diaries floating around the internet which are fairly useful.

I'd wish you good luck, but if you're relying on luck it's probably all ready too late! :ok:
