So, if we're the target because of our involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan as so many would have us believe, why have the Germans been targeted?

It could be as simple as the Germans who go to Spain for a holiday are considered to be occupiers of Muslim lands.:rolleyes:
In time....one can suppose the loyal opposition to the notion we are engaged in a "War" declared upon Western Societies by the radical elements of Islam might one day realize there is more to this hatred than they suppose.

The Germans have had forces in Afghanistan since 2002 both in the APOD at Kabul and further afield since the ISAF mandate was expanded.
Also, stories like this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1719604,00.html?gusrc=rss) probably dont help.
