Could I hazard a guess that they were waiting for a stand.

That would be the most likely answer!!

I observed a BA 777 last evening also sat waiting down there also which seemed odd.

Considering the congestion at Heathrow, isn't it logical to assume they were waiting for a stand?

Only 20 mins? Last friday I saw an AA 777 wait 4hrs on a taxiway AFTER pushing back, bet that was fun.Not.

vs69... nothing new about that, although 4 hours is a bit long. When I worked there - and that was at least 13 years ago - BA would regularly push back and "remote park" for anything up to 2 hours before departure. They would then claim to passengers that they got them away on time!!!

A lot of the longhaul aircraft waiting on taxiways at the moment, are US bound, and are required to have full passenger APIS clearance from the US authorities (after all pax on board) before they will allow it to depart.

Iv sat on a plane down the far end of the runway by t5 many times waiting for a stand in T4 and T3. Its not fun because that side of the airport still stinks from the old slurry works and gradually makes its way into the cabin!!! It will be a nightmare when T5 opens with our planes permanently stinking if the BAA dont do something about it soon!
