1st photo at Tennant Creek, refueling from the bowser. As someone said the AN metro is a bit of a give away.
2nd Batchelor aerodrome, ide say relweek as that would be the attraction most likely to draw an PC6 and a Skyvan to that beautifull spot.

Do I know you as I seem to remember both of those events all to clearly, which means I can't have been there really.

VH-BOX,
A Klemm Swallow?

No, its not a swallow, they are a bit larger aircraft. Something in the back of the old brain is saying "1940's - 50's French design", but I'm buggered if I can remember what it was.

Meat cleaver is an understatement! I stood next to one recently in Tasmania - one blade is almost 6ft tall and the better part of a foot and a half wide!

A Cresco, made by pacific aircraft in Hamilton NZ.

A beefed up fletcher, the fletcher originally came out with a IO-540 ( 300 HP ).

But now the Cresco has a PT6-34A, with a panty ripping 750 HP.

Wrooooong...originally a 220HP Continental
Tin has flown the 240 and 260 HP Contis . IO-540 upgrades began in the 60's

I doubt whether 750HP would rip anyones pants but it may be quieter.

Nope, not enough wingspan...but after stressing over it for a couple of days I think I have remembered! I believe it's a Druine Turbulent. The location is Sywell in Northants. Yes you are correct that Farnborough is older, but it has not been a public airfield for almost 80 continuous years like Sywell..

I doubt whether 750HP would rip anyones pants but it may be quieter.
The only piston versions I flew of this aircraft had the IO720 in it.
I recently flew the PT6-34 version, and it did indeed have panty ripping performance. 750Hp in an airframe as light as the PAC 750XL, is indeed eye opening after flying aircraft in the same weight range on 300Hp.
It certainly is quieter..... Until you use Beta. :}

Tinpis,
Yours must have had a sick plug, my first Fletcher, which came to James Av thru Aircraft Services, Ardmore, had a Continental O470-E and it, when new, was good for 225HP.

Wiz, maybe you must have had a bit of finger trouble there, the IO720 is 400HP, how come a jump from 300HP??

the wizard of auz
14th Jul 2007, 06:33
I meant that after flying aircraft in the same weight class, the 750Hp was eye opening. most aircraft in that class are 300hp. I wasn't specifically referring to the 720.

Looks like an inverted J3. :eek:Oi! that is an odious comparison. A J3 is a real aeroplane, General McArthur called it "the most lethal aircraft of the war". Those sitting under a Cub directed 'fire for effect' artillery barrage of more H.E. than an entire B17 squadron, undoubtedly agreed. The turbulent on the other hand is FRENCH, need I say more?

prospector we is both a bit wrong

Today's Fletcher FU24-954 has been developed through stages from a 235 hp Continental power plant in the original FU24, through to a 400 hp Lycoming IO-720 A1A eight-cylinder engine.

14th Jul 2007, 21:45
Tinpis,
No, your source is not correct, the aircraft was originally 225 HP. I may have been wrong with the engine designation, Continental O470-E, it was originally an O470-A, same as used in the original C180. The Fletcher ZK-BIP definitely had only 225HP, and lifting 15cwt with that machine one got the impression not all of those horses were working at all well.

tinpis
15th Jul 2007, 02:23
I bow to your superior memory:ok:
I did sorta think it was 220HP. Didnt the first Fletcher also not have a canopy? (Perhaps not in Kiwi?)

Ah Wiki ...

http://www.aerofiles.com/fletcher-fu24.jpg
The first prototype flew on 14 June 1954 in the United States, then broken down and sent to New Zealand, together with the (unflown) second prototype. The original prototype had a 225 hp engine and open cockpit. Subsequent aircraft had enclosed cockpits and 260 to 310 hp Continental engines.

This (http://www.airtractor.com/the-early-days) is a snow, which became both the airtractor and the thrush. No such thing as thrush 301, though. Airtractor models were/are 301 through to 802. Thrush models all started with S2. The Rockwell Thrush Commander, later the Ayres Turbo thrush, started at 400gal hopper with p&W 1340, and have grown in size since.

This (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0876589/M/) is a bull thrush, had the Wright 1820 in it, 500 gal hopper. Only 2 left in oz, the rest have been converted to turbines.:8

the wizard of auz
20th Aug 2007, 05:52
The AT301 was the one I was referring to. was always called a thrush by the bloke I was flying it for......and thus I also called it one. the other one he had was a tad bigger with a few better options, and it also was reffered to as a thrush. I'll dig out the Photos.

OK, upon further investigation, the 301 was manufactured by AIR TRACTOR INC, and the others were indeed S2R's manufactured by AYRES CORPORATION.

Lakes that are not supposed to be there, and are not shown on WAC charts, are not so unusual in the outback. They appear like magic after a big rain. Some disappear quickly, and some persist.
One is near Andado homestead, and another sometimes appears south of Hooker Creek (Lajamanu?). I have that one pencilled in on my WAC chart of the day.
I once flew the road from Docker River back to Alice Springs via Sandy Blight Junction at low level in a C310 looking for people in a Toyota who had not arrived. I had a very white faced policeman sitting alongside me as we followed the twists and turns of the road through the sandhills.
We found them in the middle of a lake that was not supposed to be there, near Mt. Leibig. They had tried to drive through it and got stuck in the middle. I guess they had then used their winch, and flattened their battery, as their radio was not working anymore.
Another time I flew a C205 from Charleville to Broken Hill at night, and saw light reflecting off a lake that was not supposed to be there. This gave rise to serious doubts, and I was very pleased when the ADF pointer stopped describing lazy circles and finally pointed straight ahead to Broken Hill.
The outback is full of changes and surprises.

Bushy

Flew between two lakes on the Tennant Ck - Broome track. The one on the left is on the WAC, but the one on the right (photo above) is not, although from the foreshore it looks like it is a "permanent" non-permanent lake, if you get my somewhat confused meaning. When I get back home I will scan the WAC with Lake Forktailed Doctor Killer marked and post it.

I thought it was interesting as in some places even the sandhills marked on the WAC are reasonably accurate.

Cheers

Dr

PS: Man, I thought the Simpson Dessert was remote and isolated and BIG - until I flew over the Tanami !

Ops, I reckon you'd be right!

The last time I was there I taxied right up behind the roadhouse. However, the other day I got the distinct impression that that was not encouraged.

I believe that to be the case now. Flew past there many times in the mid/late Friday afternoon at a distance (like many have done here) on my way back to TNK with the mail for a couple of years.

Have also stopped and gotten fuel there while driving through to either Isa or Alice. I believe it still may have the dubious honour of some of the most expensive ULP in the country at times. I can remember paying around the $1.50-60 mark a couple of years ago when fuel was normally around the $1.10 mark in DN.

Seeing as I've chucked most of my old WACs away (so can't have a look at them), would that lake you posted a pic of be up around Tanami (Mongrel) Downs way?

I used to put 210s' where the trucks are but the 402s' props are a bit close to the ground for the uneven trip over there.

I was always surprised how many people wouldn't even spot it then suddenly go "Oh sh*% look at that plane!" Bloody hell, how did they manage to drive this far in one piece?
