FTDK - love your posts. Being a desk jockey these days it's great to have some contact with the real world.
Seems you landed downwind in the last post if you can believe the sock. Can you recall the wind speed at the time or was it too light to matter?
Cheers

Oh dear! Too many observant people in here with too much time on their hands. :E Several have pointed out my shortcomings - in private.

Yes, I did land downwind. :ok: I had a very good reason for doing so, which I can't go into here.

The wind was not such that it was an issue on that strip - which I have been landing on for 30+ years.

PS: Looked it up in ERSA did you 185SW? Heard anything from the Sloshkosh crew?

No Doc, I have been past it from that angle a bit further out.
Whilst i haven't landed there, I do recognise the hangar/building layout.
I haven't heard from the airbums.

The Oshkosh "crew" haven't arrived yet, should be there 4pm local time tomorrow (Monday) just in time for the "Chicago" concert (those old enough would know who they are).

My crew went via NZ, WAY TOO FAR via NZ to LAX, don't do it!

Am yet to spot an A380 at LAX they seem to be few and far between.

I have heard of the principal that helicopters fly because they are so ugly the earth repels them, but I didn't know it applied to fixed wing as well.

I'm assuming that's the Premier 1 shown earlier after crashing at Oshkosk? Looks to be the same paint scheme, not to mention also looks like a Premier 1!

The last thing I'd be giving a **** about would be my camera bag! But those plane geeks are a funny bunch.

Indeed that is where the name Navion is drawn from.

There have been at least 2 in Australia, and I think one is still in existence in Victoria.

The name Rangemaster is for the version with tip tanks and a wet wing, giving it something like 15 hours endurance.

Leader Telegram: News - NASCAR's Roush injured in plane crash at Oshkosh air show (http://www.leadertelegram.com/news/daily_updates/article_46544440-9a51-11df-97f6-001cc4c03286.html)

MILWAUKEE (AP) - NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was in serious but stable condition after walking away from a plane crash in Wisconsin on Tuesday night.

"There are injuries. Possible surgery," Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith said in a text message to The Associated Press. "But he walked out of the plane."

Smith confirmed that the plane belonged to Roush, and he was flying it. Smith said Roush's injuries include facial lacerations.

Roush, an aviation buff, was attending the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture in Oshkosh this week.

In a statement on the EAA Web site, officials said a Beechcraft Premier business jet registered to Roush Fenway Racing, LLC was involved in a landing accident at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. CDT, the statement said.

According to the EAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and Winnebago County Sheriff's Department confirmed that two occupants on board were Roush and Brenda Strickland of Plymouth, Mich. Strickland is a friend of Roush's.

"Each exited the aircraft following the accident," the statement said. "Both were transported to local hospitals, with Roush in serious but stable condition and Strickland with non-life threatening injuries. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the accident."

According to a statement from the team, Roush was landing his plane when the accident occurred.

"Dr. Kevin Wasco, the attending physician, says that Roush is in serious but stable condition," the team's statement said. "His injuries are not life threatening."

It is the second close call for Roush, who crashed a plane into a pond in Alabama in 2002 and nearly drowned before being rescued by an ex-Marine who lived nearby. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Roush continued flying.

Roush owns several aircraft, including a World War II-vintage P-51 Mustang.

After having success in dragsters and sports car racing, Roush - a former Ford engineer and college physics teacher - founded his NASCAR team in 1988. Known for his trademark Panama-style hat, academic speaking style and love for tinkering with anything mechanical, he won championships in NASCAR's top series with Matt Kenseth in 2003 and Kurt Busch in 2004.

Since 2007, Roush has partnered with the Fenway Sports Group, the sports marketing arm of the Boston Red Sox's parent company.

The team currently fields cars in the Cup series for Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and David Ragan.

They must be waiting for that big Airbus to get out of the way so that they can get a good shot of the little lime one. The security escort told them if they so much as put ONE toe on the red line they would be charged with terrorism. The Cathay aircraft has the tallest ADF receiver I've ever seen....must make a howl at cruise.

'For those with iPhones there is a LiveCam app with user controllable views of oshKosh airport, pretty cool.'

So in other words you are also one of those 'muppet spotters'.

Grow up you hypocrite.

These people like to look at and photograph aircraft, good on them.

After the collective dumbing down of our industry by politicians, airlines and the pilots themselves with the race to the bottom ( buy the worst paid job at Virgin, jetstar etc etc etc ), we should be happy that anyone is still interested in what we do.

With over 2000 posts on this site I would suggest you like to talk about and look at aeroplanes - just like the 'muppet spotters' you mock.

So what are your other esteemed ' cool ' interests Mr XXX ?

Critical Reynolds No
12th Aug 2010, 22:26
There is a big difference between Spotters and Enthusiast. Spotters, from what I have witnessed, have no professional links or hands on experience in relation to aviation. Be it a pilot, cabin crew or bag chucker. They are just interested if a carriers latest aircraft has had it's first visit, write it down on a pad, share with their mates or get their pics in Aus Av. Plus they are damn rude as I have mentioned before.
XXX is like 99% of people with a real passion for flying. If you don't wet yourself with what's available at Oshkosh, you're in the wrong hobby/interest/profession!

The ADF should be made keep a couple of operational F111's purely for the purpose of public displays.

We saw all sorts of things including the Blue Angels performing over Lake Washington, and while they are good, we are spoiled with the F111.

As a marketing tool alone for the ADF the F111 is the best thing ever. Bar none.

The government waste...and I mean waste, far more money each year than a few F111's would cost to operate for public displays. It would be cheaper still to let the temora folk operate them like they do the Sabre, and donate the $$$ to them to run the show.

It would be one thing most Australian tax payers would support as being a good investment in the future compared to many other schemes the government spend our taxes on.

Not exactly in the class of an F111 but significant, I think, none the less.
Taken at an Air show in Napier some years back the Monospar was owned by NZ Aeriel Mapping and was flown by the owner Pete Van Ash on these Air show demo's.
Unfortunately it was destroyed in a hangar fire, I think it was the last one flying in the world at the time.

Do you have any details on the glider LZ-NC? It looks like a Zephyrus (http://www.beaufortgc.org.au/Aircraft_Club.htm#GHZ), but I thought it was a one-off Australian design.

@FTDK -Lake Washington, Seattle? Brilliant spot, spent days there wandering around wide-eyed!!! Pristine aircraft!

@FSO Griffo -re: ski's... there's a little more to it than just throwing a set of skis on & charging off looking for somewhere to play, as I'm sure you are aware. I reckon Compressor Stall and others would have some invaluable information & knowledge to pass on. Not too sure if you'd be able to get appropriate training in AUS -nearest I can think of would be Mt Cook in NZ.

BTW: in a pinch, floats can be used on snow too ;)

Yes, it is Lake Hood, in Anchorage, Alaska. Will try to get some aerial shots - if it ever fines up! Hoping to get some Beaver (:E) tomorrow.

Not a single V-tail to be seen anywhere! What do they use to kill Doctors up here? Fat-tyred Super Cubs!

Pretty amazing place! Ted Stevens International Airport, Lake Hood Floatplane base and the adjacent GA "bush" strip - all controlled by the one tower. Hard to imagine that happening in Oz.

The Aviation Heritage Museum is worth a visit and some very rare aircraft around the place including the fuselage of a Sikorsky Clipper. A Grumman Duck, Goose and Widgeon were in the hangar. Helio Couriers on floats behind the 'K2' Aviation building and even a GA-8 Airvan or two lurking about (on wheels like sensible aeroplanes).

I want one!

Anyone got any experience of operating one in Aus (besides the army) and would like to share. I've been in an ex-army one (VH-REL) years ago and it would be great to get one back in Aus dropping jumpers. I'm guessing the numbers probably don't compare to the PAC 750XL/C208 though.

Hmmm...it's not showing up when embedded...here's the link

Fixed - just put what comes after the = sign between the youtube brackets.

Got taught by the great BD of Nagambie fame how to fly MKT. Just had to remember to make sure the trim was set and stowed otherwise it could practically kill you by being out of trim and not enough flight control to recover or when it popped out and spun around, the handle could knock you out cold. Also quite exciting if you forgot to lock the tailwheel trying to stay straight. It was a true aircraft in the sense that you could load it up and as long as you could close the door it would fly. But otherwise an awesome machine which I would love to try with a bigger donk than the 500 shp dash 20 I think it was that it had.

Must try and track the history of it over the last 20 or so, years, and if it is still going. Was our first turbine (and mine too). Delivered new mid November '80. Serial # TC 338. Don't have a note in the diary on the exact date, but see that I had an engine failure in an Islander after departing Ballalae over the border while going to Kieta on the 10th Nov. and landed there on one, picked it up on the 12th. and flew it for the next 3 days, then later did training circuits and a flight to Auki in the Metro on the 19th Nov., and a service to Kieta ICUS the next day. One of the few new ones flown - have put time on high time frames mostly - so the new Islander in Queensland previously, and the the two new ATR's S#'s 0109 and 0113 later, were all good equipment at the time..

Thanks for that.. they do look much clearer, maybe I shouldn't post my old faded ones. As long as it doesn't cost me.. Others must have been offended by my previously posted poor photo quality too, as they have offered similarly.. There are some classic photos of some classic old aircraft in the Aviation History and Nostalgia thread in similar condition to mine. See that most posters make the effort to tidy up, or have good modern equipment, just that some of my previous attempts at making the 'reddish' ones clearer with the program I have, haven't ended to my liking.

Watched 'The Battle of Britain' movie again last night on a gift DVD. With a young Michael Caine, Suzannah York, and all the other good players. Saw the movie the first time when it was released, as an Aero Club outing to the Wintergarden theatre on the big screen at a group discount.

Met Suzannah York a couple of years later, and her husband, when they were filming 'Eliza Fraser' on Fraser Island. Had a charter in the 182 over to Eurong, and landed on the beach when the tide was out. As I came over the top, could see they were filming the 'whaleboat landing through the surf' scene, so widened out, picked a good section of beach, and landed behind the camera angles. They would have had to cut the 20th century sound out of that take. It was a beautiful day, sunny, and not much swell, so I waited and watched the filming after I dropped off my passengers. ( Island Airways were doing most of the flying for the film crews, I only got the tidbits). They would push off, row though the surf until out past the breaker line, turn around, the cameras on shore would roll, and the boat and crew would row and surf in to be captured for another Take. Flying can be repetitious, too, but is preferable to that. Met the couple when they were in a little 4 wheel drive later. Lovely actress.

Hey Wanderin'

I think you were close enough with the first sentence to win the goldfish.

It had an engine failure and returned to Williamtown with arrester hook down & cable on the runway up. Landed safely with no further issues.

Mayhem then insued while they tried to get the cable down and aircraft holding (hawk formations & a poor Pelican JS32 mxiing it in as well)

Delivered to 82 Wing 06/10/70. Served with 6 Sqn RAAF. Badly damaged 19/10/70 at Amberly QLD, after an inflight equipment failure the aircraft was damaged during landing. The nosewheel stearing and brake anti skid were not working. The pilot recieved minor injuries and navigator was un-injured. The rebuild took 18,750 manhours. A large crack was also found in its stabilator during the rebuild, which meant most of the other aircraft stabilators required an X-ray in 1972. Flown 09/71. To 82 Wing 15/10/71. Returned to USAF 22/10/72 as 69-7234. Served with 86th TFW, 526th TFS at Ramstein from 1973 until at least 1978 as an F-4E. Modified to F-4G between 1978-81. Served with 347th TFW, 35th TFW,37th TFW,52nd TFW USAF. Credited with 4 kills on Iraqi Radar sites during Operation Desert Storm. To AMARC as FP0761, 20/09/91. To MFSI, Mojave, CA. Headed to Bankstown this morning for a one-way ferry flight via Moorabbin to pick up the aircraft owner. Conditions at 8am into Essendon and Moorabbin were IFR with restricted VFR operations permitted with one aircraft at a time only.

So after arriving into Moorabbin under some very special VFR, it was a departure to the South (to get out under the crap), then over the top to north of Melbourne then onto Bankstown via a stop at Albury. A nice and handy 20 knot head-wind all the way taking 4 hours. Oh well. She then settled into her new (original) home back at Bankstown with a very happy new owner.

There's some familiar terrain in there in pics for 3, 4 & 5 that many of you will know.

They're a very commercially successful and professionally run flying training organisation. Not a penny from yours my taxes. A stark contrast to some in the same business who don't exist any more. It may surprise some to know that Unis are very hard-nosed about such ventures these days and won't finance anything like this unless it makes money for them, which this one undoubtedly will continue to do.

They didn't bring your prop down for you did they?;)

Dixon,

Almost but no cigar. It was double that.

And it was indeed Peterborough International Airport. Very busy airspace down that way.

Only down side of that trip is I now have an 11 year old son who dreams of flying helicopters. Oh the shame!!! :E

No luck with the prop delivery I'm afraid. I had no idea I would be going to Bankstown on Sunday though, I could have organised to pick it up myself otherwise.

You would be too Jaba, particularly when there's 3 aircraft on final on the 3 runways simultaneously. I'm a little out of my comfort zone with a centre runway thrown in the mix, particularly in the same aircraft type that had a midair up there (not that that has anything to do with it really).
