I intend to call this the 'Eyre Cutter'.. Its a prototype of a Green Land Speed Record Attempt Vehicle for Lake Eyre (a la Don Campbell), for when it dries out again. At the moment it has the wheels off, and a hull fitted. Just need 5 Mill. to bring the project into production. A Government Grant would be great.
With the convertible chassis, it has a million other applications as well..

I learnt to fly on that PA28 VH-CNH,in 1973 when it was brand new.

I hope that the aircraft in the hanger is not being painted with 2 pack. I notice that the guys spraying are not using fresh air supplied breathing masks. there is no such thing as a filter for isocyanates (not sure of the spelling, but you get the idea ), or so I was told by my paint supplier.

toolowtoofast
20th Apr 2010, 09:22
Highly likely be 2-pack. They don't paint planes in lacquer. It's hardly going to matter though - the finished job is going to be rubbish considering the environment it's being done it.

Errr no, I am not a professional painter, only what I have been told when doing painting on my aircraft and building my RV(7). The finish that the painter got painting that Cessna to me is unimportant and unknown by me in any case. But as indicated in my previous post, I have been warned by people supposedly in the know, that painting 2 pack without a remote air supply to a positive pressure mask is dangerous. I do have such equipment for the painting that I do.It was in the way of a, hopefully, helpfull warning that I made the post. 2 pack paint fumes are a carcinogen.

there is no such thing as a filter for isocyanates

Hi Arnold,

Not true - I have worked in mining using Polyurethane and I have post graduate qualifications in OHS.

The correct grade of filter on the correct type of respirator will provide protection against Isocyanates. It depends on the concentration of chemical in that atmosphere - I don't recall (last timeI was in the hangar) seeing proper air exchange systems although I wasn't looking either (I was swearing about my broken aircraft) :ugh:

On another tack,
Kavachi Submarine Volcano towards the end of its 6 week (average) eruption cycle. About every two years it would build itself up from one of the vents from the seamount (different vent most times), to a height of about 30 feet above the surface, and throw molten stuff and steam up to about 500 feet. Also when the ocean swells came rolling through there would be a lot of steam. Quite spectacular to see. Then as it started to die down, the eruptions would become less frequent after a month, and in another month it would be collapsed back below the surface as a muddy stain again.

Further east, Tinakula was smoking all the time, and would squeeze rocks the size of Volkswagens out and roll them down 2,000 feet into the ocean

How does the nosewheel come down without the mains in the landing sequence?

Dr :8

1st May 2010, 04:54
Hey Doc, too complicated for the likes of me to fully understand, but... yes, he attached the camera to the FLG with cable-ties, then after take-off raised the gear in the normal fashion. When he descended to FL100 and slowed to (whatever his gear extension speed is) he selected an alternate gear extension (?) and lowered only the nose wheel.

Balleka has got a video explaining the whole thing in detail, but it is not up at the moment, now that his employer has folded he might be at liberty to put it back up.

To the experts, it wouldn't surprise me if I got that NQR so be gentle - please?

Jaba
Last year (5th.May 09), when I took the Frigatebird 1, YIMT-via the Groove-YWMC-YIMT, to see the Waters, when flying low over the eastern side of Lake Eyre it was hard to see the channel where Cooper Creek joins as there was no flow in then. How close to the Lake is the water in Cooper Creek now, or is it already flowing in? If not, do you think it will make it, or peter out in the desert again?
We had looked at Cubby on the way out then, it was dry then - would be very different now..

Jabawocky
4th May 2010, 21:44
Lots more water out there this year FB, the Cooper is still over the causway/road (5M)at YIMT, the camp sites are still under water and you would have to think it would make it to the Lake, but only a local would know.

Its not flowing into the lake yet. We saw where it had made it to so far and that was still a ittle way to go, and it spreads out a bit in various places.

Pilotette or others working out there may be best to answer that one.

OK, I'll bite! I assume that the camera is attached to the nose wheel - appears to be the case, with gear doors opening and closing.

How does the nosewheel come down without the mains in the landing sequence?Wondered that myself, so I went searching...

Turns out he used the 747's Alternate Gear Extension system to drop the NLG on descent, then the mains when required. The system can be seen on the panel here (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Iran-Air-Cargo/Boeing-747-2J9F/1515230/L) just to the left of centre...

Further to KRviator's find....to the left and up a bit is 'Flt Controls Hyd Pwr' followed by 'rudders, elevators, spoilers, ailerons and CCA'. Can anyone tell me what CCA is?

Towering Q - your question on CCA started to get to me so I did some research :8

I think it means Central Control Actuator. There's a bit of a technical discussion here (http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/tech_ops/read.main/27569/) that may be of interest.

Hey Jaba, very disappointed I didn't see or hear you around the traps! I was flying a couple of vets around to a few stations doing preg testing while you were living it up the scenic way ;)

Frigate, its hard to know whether the Cooper water will make it all the way down to the Lake but there are some serious plans being put in place at the moment for the ferry accross the Birdsville Track to become operational again this year. One good sign is the fact that Lake Hope is completely full and there is a lot of water yet to come! The waters have started to subside at Innaminka and I'll post some photos shortly of the creek at Innaminka that I took yesterday.

Jaba, I'm intrigued by that strip and it looks very familiar but can't put my finger on it just yet!

Everyone to their own opinion. The bits of Australia I find boring are the ribbon development stretches of a highway section that just spring up with pre-fabricated concrete walled unitized fast food takeaway outlets, or motels, or used car yards all in a row. Can see them in any tourist area or the suburbs of any large city. Reminds me of the words of the song that go, "and they're all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the same".

Did the obligatory trip a couple of weeks ago up through NW NSW and SW QLD to have a look at how much water got dumped on the ground up there back in February. To say "lot's" is understating things somewhat.
We were staggered at how much water is still laying around nearly three months after the event. If you get the chance to get out there over the next few weeks and have a look, don't hesitate, it's well worth it.
I hope the pics aren't to repetitive as I know Jaba (at least I got the wing in the right half of the picture) and some others have already posted on this subject.

In the days gone by I thought they were a great step up and the idea of the retractable gear appealed to me as well as their speed compared to the competition.

I must admit that one model of the C210 gave some concern when the undercarriage locks would let the gear doors partially open in the cruise!.

What is utterly amazing about that C210 is that all the ARC **** in the stack and the 400A autopilot is still working:eek:

They are a fine aeroplane - FTDKer kindly threw the keys to a low hr 1984(?) model with IO550/G430/55x a/p a couple of years ago for a quick 4 or 5 hrs including some IFR (in IMC). The owner has asked that the factory new engine be run in while he was in hospital.

It was a fun days flying after 25 odd years away from the 210 but at some point during the day Forkie looked at me from the rhs with raised eyebrow (I think it was while we were on descent into Mackay or somewhere listening to the windscreen creak in the light chop) "so whaddya think?" Interestingly the C195 DOES have the build quality, if not the handling, of a Bonanza so Cessna could do it at one point in its history.

What is utterly amazing about that C210 is that all the ARC **** in the stack and the 400A autopilot is still working

ARC **** indeed. I like to use the word 'Sperry' when refering to the radio stack in the 210. It sounds a bit more substantial, something with a superiour air of quality about it than that 'fcuken old ARC ****'.
To give credit where it's due though, the 400 series radios that generally came as standard in the 210's in 81/82 and onwards were actually a reasonable package back in their day, certainly a step up from the 300 series.
We planned to fill the stack with some Garmin goodies, but the older 400 stuff works well and sounds crystal clear, so we'll leave them right where they are for the time being.
The 400B (not an 'A', they were rubbish) still does a pretty good job of driving the 210 when the pilot wants a rest. It's very realiable and seems well matched to the 210 airframe. You'll quite often see a new stack of bells, whistles and glass spread across the panel of some 210's with the 400B A/P hiding, rather self conscientiously, at the bottom of the stack.
It mightn't have some of the features of the later A/P's, but it still does a very competent job of pointing the 210 where it needs to go.

I think if Cessna had built the C210 with the build quality and handling of the Bonanza it would still be in production and maybe the Bo wouldn't

I reckon the build quality on the 210's is actually pretty good. Maybe not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the Bonanza (lot's of wrinkles in the skins for example on the 210), but Ok none the less.
Cessna claims they couldn't build the 210 and then get it to the market at a price that customers felt comfortable with. The parts count in a 210 is around 30% higher than the 206, so maybe there's some truth in that.
The retrac gear was also a negative against it's re-introduction. Insurance premiums to high as opposed to the fxed gear Cirrus, the new kid on the block at the time. Funny thing is, the Cirrus accident/fatally rate is right up there along side the 210 and for awhile was higher. Anyway Cessna knocked it on the head and that's that.
They announced with great fanfare the new 'NGP' at Oshkosh a few year's back and everyone said 'It better go as well as a 210'. Well it didn't and as yet, still hasn't seen the light of day. The 210 was to hard an act to follow.
Apologies for hijacking a picture show forum to waffle on about 210's. A couple more pics from the trip up north and then I'll go.

Some of the crew at YTIB. There were four aircraft in company on the trip. The others were a couple of 172's. The pilots felt it was a bit below their station in life to been seen out and about in such a lowly performing aircraft and are, rather cowardly, hiding on the other side of the camera. They would only make a run for the 172's when they thought noone was looking.

Wild lorikeets sitting on heads and shoulders and a kookaburra perched in the tree over the BBQ that filched the meat should you err and turn your back. Tell me about it. I was present at AMTDU a few years ago when a very, very senoir Ronnie stated that he didn't "want Army personell crewing our aircraft". It has all been downhill from there.
With AAvn seemingly banned from fixed wing ops and the RAAF not really interested in light tactical airlift anymore, what hope have we got? It is a mistake. As soon as the Govt realises that we have to be able to deploy and support Soldiers in our own region they will realise how poorly equipped we are. Good luck operating a C-17 (or C-130 for that matter) in PNG!

My family and friends think that I am obsessed with aviation. They were relieved to hear that I was interested in the sea. So we went Sailing in the Whitsundays. However I had to get my aviation fix...

http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac59/jerrpprune/WhitSunday20001Small.jpg
We tethered ourselves in out dinghy off the back of our yacht. The seaplane pilot landed behind us and taxied up to the dinghy and we all climbed aboard. We then had a great trip around the Whitsundays.

Thanks Guys

'Tis indeed a shame to see so many 'historic' aircrfaft types just b e g g i n g for someone with lotsa $$'s and a not-so-small donation from the USAF or where-ever to see some of them back in the air....purely for historical purposes and the sheer joy of it..! :p

Is the Commanche the only aeroplane where the nosewheel is larger than the mains?

Had a go at one around 30 years ago. I think it might have been based at Ballarat back then. 21/22 Usgph from what I remember, close to the 185kt mark. The 260C was a nicer machine to fly, but the 400 could go awfully hard when you wanted it to.
Reckon the Comanche was one of the best things that Piper ever did. It's a true GA classic

OK- I'll have a go........ Maroochydore and a Cessna C-34???????

S28-BE

Article ex the Australian:

New home for nation's first Cessna: C-34

Steve Creedy, Aviation writer
From: The Australian (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/)
April 30, 2010 12:00AMIT was damaged in several forced landings, pressed into service by the RAAF and has had a string of owners in five states.

But the first Cessna to fly in Australia -- and one of only two C-34s in the world -- has made it through three-quarters of a century to find a new home in Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Aeromil Pacific boss and Cessna dealer Steve Padgett acquired the rare aircraft, VH-UYG, from former Ansett captain Greg Cox last December.
"In the end it was a bit hard for him to hang on to, for all sorts of reasons," Mr Padgett said this week. "I was very keen to get hold of it to preserve the history as the first Cessna in Australia.
"And we're going to really look after it and probably put it in showroom-type environment on the Sunshine Coast Airport, but also keep it flying."
The aircraft, part of what would later become known as the Airmaster series, was the second last of 42 C-34s to be built in 1935-36.
Described by Cessna historian Edward H. Phillips as "the right airplane at the right time" , the affordable C-34 saved the Cessna Aircraft Company after it had been forced by the Great Depression to close its doors in the early 1930s.
It was designed by a young aeronautical engineer who was also the nephew of Clyde Cessna, Dwane Wallace.
Wallace had been working with Walter Beech, of Beech Aircraft fame, when he began designing a new aircraft and teamed with his brother Dwight to wrest control of his uncle's company.
Work quickly began on the C-34, a plane featuring a full cantilevered wing, a four-seat cabin and powered by a Warner Super Scarab radial engine.
Costing $US4985 and with a cruise speed of 145mph (235km/h), the plane won the Detroit News Trophy Race for overall efficiency and the first production aircraft was delivered to a customer in November 1935.
The Australian plane came off the production in December 1936 and was shipped to Australia in January 1938 to be registered with Airflight Ltd, at Mascot, in July.
It would suffer a series of forced and crash landings over the next two years before being pressed into service as a communications aircraft by the RAAF.
A forced landing due to a partial engine failure and difficulties servicing the radial engine would see the RAAF offer it to civilian buyers and it was sold for pound stg. 50 to the president of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA Section), Harold Dicks.
Dicks used the aircraft to fly from the Maylands Aerodrome to do medical work in rural Western Australia.
The aircraft would be sold again in 1947 and go through a series of owners based in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia. It was taken off the register in 1973 and transferred to Albury, NSW, in 1977 to be dismantled and stored.
In 1991, new owner Kim Ryan picked it up from Albury on a purpose-built trailer and took it back to Cairns. Mr Ryan was lucky enough to find 74-year-old retired aircraft engineer John Lucas, whose woodworking skills allowed the wing structure to be reconditioned.
Because the Super Scarab was missing, the aircraft was initial fitted with a W670 Continental engine when it again took to the skies in 1993.
It was subsequently replaced by a Super Scarab acquired in Sydney and aircraft was re-registered that year.
The aircraft was bought by Mr Cox in 2000 and flown privately until Mr Padgett acquired it last year.

Can anyone tell me where in the States and the next type?

Well you are not giving us a lot to work with, but my guesses are -

Arlington WA, in which case the photos are a few months old
Watsonville or Merced, CA, in the past couple of weeks these each have had vintage fly-ins. The terrain in the background does not resemble either of these Californian ports though.

Failing that, I'm stumped.

:ok: The 400 is owned by the Mills family of King island. Bought BRAND new by the late Ernest (EDM) and passed down to his son now. Old Ernie just flew where ever he wanted....he through the regs out the window, no rules, jusr fly.

The 400 is the "poor mans" Mustang, although not so much the poor man anymore as they cost a lot to run and maintain. However a true rocket in every sense of the word. Love 'em!!

Oh yes Doc, the Comanche did sit nose high, which produced unfavourable landing characteristics (controlled crashes) so some smart guy bought out the small nose wheel tyre STC which helps. I have always said that anyone who bitches about Comanche landings......simply can't fly 'em properly.

Not being bias but the Comanche was one of the greatest aircraft ever produced. My old girl was the last twin co to leave the factory, fitted with a Robertson STOL.....full fuel, 4 bums, full luggage, approach stall slower than a 172 and take off/ land in the same distance.

The engineers have been busy and short staffed so nought has happened since March.
