The Beaver was filmed at Lake Hood airport Anchorage Alaska USA. its the float plane and gA airport atatched to Anchorage Ted Stevens international airport.
Its the MOST amazing place in the world for light aircraft buffs. Do a search for PANC and you should get the details.
There is a good bar their to watch them from too, as also in Vancouver to watch the float planes there too.
On the other side is all our 744's and MD11 freighters.
It seems like everyone north of Seattle has a beaver on floats up there. Amazing. They really know how to fly them. maybe not this one though!! hahahha

A blistering tailwind at FL150 enabled a non-stop flight of 1300 nm from Geraldton WA to Parafield SA in this single engine normally aspirated aircraft. TAS was 168 kts, Fuel flow was 12.4 USGPH @ 2400rpm and 16.2" MP, with about 18 USG in the tanks at Parafield.

What sort of aircraft?

Skywagon185 - still some snags with the aircraft, mostly in the avionics + 6 cylinder recalls due, but otherwise it is a beautiful machine. Climb performance is unreal with the black mac/550 combination. The aspen has been great so far. Only problem with it is that it doesn't dim down enough at night, but this is apparently on the list of things to be addressed with the pending software upgrade (due this month I think).

The Ovation has 280 hp - how many horses does the Bo have under the bonnet? From the performance charts I was at around 50% power (OAT -5) and to achieve maximum range I slow the aircraft down to increases the tailwind component of total groundspeed. Another 100 rpm might have got a few more kts but I wanted to arrive with intact reserves.

I'm not happy flying much higher - using a nasal cannula for 02 delivery, I find my blood O2 saturation trends towards at or below safe levels when operating at FL170 and above, and I can't be bothered using a full face mask.

I use a Contac CMS-50E Pulse Oximeter to display blood O2 saturation, pulse rate and sine wave of the heartbeat, and has a recording and download capability.

OK, I go to FL180 with a cannula with no problem maintaining >90% O2 saturation. That's OK cause I can't get much higher.

I can't be bothered using a full face mask.

Wont argue with that! I dropped $300 on one with a mic - but can't stand wearing it.

Monitor progress of the flight, change tanks every 1/2 hour, lookout for flat open spaces just in case, position report as required, try and stay awake - just the usual stuff. I keep binoculars on board, and on a long flight I will explore the terrain as it glides past - great way to pass the time.

A practical way of testing your O2 stats is to do Suduko or a Crossword, and if/when you start to have trouble with the solution you crank the O2 flow up a notch.

FTDK wrote:

....and the problem with SpO2 monitors is that they are reading SpO2....NOT PaO2; the relationship between the two is not linear, so by the time the SpO2 has fallen to a level below optimal (arguably <98%), the arterial saturation is way lower and the incipient/actual hypoxia can undermine your ability to recognise the problem!

They also cannot differentiate between oxyhaemoglobin saturation and carboxyhaemoglobin saturation - ie they cannot warn you that you are suffering carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be an issue in piston aeroplanes at high level where you need to use cabin heat supplied by either an exhaust muff or a fuel-fired heater........

Can you repeat that in plain English?

Seriously, the Ovation has two independent CO detectors, one being a CO Guardian Aero 152A, and the other a Domestic unit (from Home Depot), and Ovation has completed a High Altitude Training course at RAAF Edinburgh.

While I'm at Oshkosh next week (eat your hearts out guys) I've got the CO Guardian Panel Mount Aero 452 14/28V RS232 for MFD (http://www.guardianavionics.com/aero-452-28v.html) on top of the shopping list.

And this just for QF Wankerbe - a real cockpit.

This is the cockpit of a Tiger I used to fly 25+ years ago which a mate is just finishing restoring ground up in the hangar across from my Bo. It should fly this weekend - but I will have to wait until I am next in town to get my mitts on the old girl again.

And as I was soon to discover when I sat in it to run the engine and taxi it around a bit - the Tiger Moth has more leg room:eek:

Also had an enjoyable 45 minutes or so flying Jaba's RV-10 out of YCAB last Thursday - it flies as good as it looks...just fantastic - and Jaba/Chris are to be congratulated too on an excellent job building it, not only extremely well, but in little more than 8 months...the bloody thing has more technology in the cockpit than the B767 I will be flying in a few days time - all in all a great 8 day break back in paradise.

Ultralights, two questions in regards to your last pic there

1. Is it as much fun as it looks

2. How can I have a play in it? :)

When did flying at 100ft'ish along the beach become legal in the Sydney basin / NSW? RAAus must be useless and never take any action if you are prepared to post such a pic in here and disappointing that you are also an RAAus instructor. If that was a CASA registered aircraft you'd be up for 50 demerit points and $5,500 in fines and don't try and tell me that was on Fraser Island or similar!

I would think, looking at the scene, the run along the beach would be closer to 700 to 800ft, the Altimeter reads in thousands of feet, in my opinion.

The breakers would be a lot closer if that was in fact a reading of 100ft.

that would be this little toy, i have never had the chance to fly it, but i would imagine its more fun than my Vampire, im pretty sure its based at Jaspers Brush, if you pop in there, you might be able to talk yourself into a flight!

if you look closely enough, you will see its a single needle altimeter, only reads to 10,000 ft, so yes, its at 750 ft. not below 100.

If someone else hasn't said it, there are quite alot of ultralight aircraft with single pointer altimeters.

not to mention single needle Altimeters are a hell of a lot cheaper than the standard twin needle alts. :ok: and in an aircraft that is not transponder equipped, or legally able to fly above 10K, why waste the money.

Wish I still had some of the old pix from Masons Bay, Spit Island, Doughboy Bay or Big Bay as shot from a BN-2 on many, many flights whilst doing LOW LEVEL beach inspections prior to landing on commercial ops -entirely legally. Just because you see a pic shot from an aircraft LL on a beach doesn't mean that the flight was operating even slightly illegally. When you are doing a proper beach inspection, it is necessary to get pretty much 'right down in the weeds' if you are to have any hope of seeing things that could potentially take the shine off your whole day -if you haven't already looked for them, found them and sorted out an appropriate method of handling them.

Just a glance at the original photo was enough for me to see it was well over the 100' your post suggested VH-XXX -I had to scroll back up again for a look at the altimeter! Grinding a wee axe from a few threads ago are we??? :E

With 3 serious folk you could build 2 of them in 8 months.

Hi Peter,
Good point on things not being really 'new' - in a lot of cases.
I guess it's relatively speaking - as the Hondajet is a new thing - maybe not a new concept, but still new for it's market.

Talking with some clued up aircraft designers, it's interesting to note that different designers have 'signature' things that they do. Was quite funny, this guy was able to guess pretty accurately who designed a certain wing profile by the shapes of bumps and curves in the profile. Interesting stuff.

Even more interesting is a website - Luft '46 - WWII German aircraft projects (http://www.luft46.com/) - that has a lot of concepts by the Germans during WW2. A lot of the concepts from that era have appeared in things that are 'cutting edge' now.... Eg. Looking through it, there are some things that look similar to spaceship one etc. Sure there is a huge amount of development with new designs to make them viable, but some of the early concepts and sketches are sure being re-visited...

More pictures coming shortly - today I learnt that I suck at fabric covering and need some more practice. Managed to gas weld reasonably well (from patching up rusted up cars in a previous life) - and saw the A380 arrive and Spaceship one do it's routine.

Mark 22 Mustang CAC S/N 1417 Delivered 03/1951.

Sold overseas 04/1958 ex VH FCB and PI-C-651.

Jack McDonald was also regularly seen around Bankstown in the late 50's He caught me sitting in Fawcett's VH BOZ (from memory) dreaming as one did in those days and I had the pleasure of a long ground "endorsement". That sort of thing is probably illegal today.

The Robin had an interesting history in Oz. They were built in Canada. Had the same engine as the PA28-161 - were a two seat fully aerobatic aircraft. Fun to fly and this one was on cross-hire to the Canberra Aero Club.

The company in Canada decided to stop production and a Canadian entrepenuer decided to buy the last (I think) about 8 aircraft and the moulds and jigs and came to Oz with his attractive tall blonde third wife (he was short and fat) and in 1984-5 embarked on a Oz marketing program. They cost at that time about A$35,000 VFR. They were all black and gold.

LXX one was bought by a friend of mine. The Sydney Aerobatic School bought a few and I think one went to Adelaide. One of the SAS regos was SEX.

One was involved in a fatal accident at Sydney and another was written off as the crew filmed their own crash when they failed to recover from a spin. It was piloted by someone who was an editor of a popular aviation magazine who ended up replacing me at the CAA - in safety promotion.

That was about it.

The smooth talking Canadian went broke but the aircraft stayed on.

I would suspect that there are about 3-4 still flying - must check.

I had some fun in it at flying comps where this pic was taken. From memory this was a forced landing and I would have failed - the fence was dropped by the team as I would have taken it out. It just looks like I am going to get 50 points. But good practice.

Hey Doc,

VH-SEX, was a PA-30 originally bought by Aircraft Rentals at BK, and owned by one Mr J.Cougle, way back around '66.

All clients were asked to be very careful when booking the acft and NOT to ask the delightful 'June' for .....

At the same time he also reserved the regos SIN and SON, and the idea of the time was to park them outside on the flight line - in that order....
SIN was a PA31 which still exists.
SON was to be a Seneca.

Good to see the ole' SEX still active!

The ALPHA R2160 was manufactured in Hamilton NZ up until last year when Alpha went into receivership...the Waikato Aeroclub was one of the launch customers and received 3 Alpha ZK-WCD, WKF, WJH (W-signifying the Waikato Aero Club, and the two following letter ar initials of significant members in the club's history).

All clients were asked to be very careful when booking the acft and NOT to ask the delightful 'June' for .....
At the same time he also reserved the regos SIN and SON, and the idea of the time was to park them outside on the flight line - in that order....

GRIFFO, for a time back in the late 70's there was also an Auster J1B at Warwick, VH-ASK. We put pressure on the local flying school to get VH-FOR for their latest training aircraft so that we could line them up as: ASK FOR SEX !

ZK-SXY is a Czech Sportcruiser based near NZHN. There's FXY too - on line at CTC from memory

I believe Alpha has recently been sold by the receivers and the factory at NZHN will again start turning out the R2160's.

Definitely sold. Not sure about starting up the Alpha line in HN again though - rumour has it it is going offshore to the cheapest labour in the world.....to my knowledge there has been no shoulder tapping or word on employment opportunities amongst the previous staff.

A long time ago, ZK-SEX was a C-207 operated by a well-known Mt Cook operator. I think it wound up in Te Anau or Queenstown for a while after that, not sure.
