Hi all,
I have tried and tried again to obtain the relevant info before posting this so apologies if this has been covered before (as I know it has!) :)
My MEP is up for renewal soon, however I don't think I will have time to renew it until after it has in fact lapsed.

That said, I've consulted Lasors (2005) which says that in order to renew a Multi-engine class rating after the date of expiry (but within 5 years) one must " pass a proficiency check in accordance with appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.240 with a JAR authorised examiner".

Can anyone explain what this is?!
How is it different from the 'standard' requirement to renew, namely before your expiry date( a flight of "1 route sector flown with an authorised examiner")??
many thanks,
Emerald flyer.

Not 100% sure but isn't it a question of what paper is issued to the CAA?
In the first case, the PC requires the use of form xxx submitted to the CAA.
In the second case it's a question of performing a take-off, cruise and landing. If the examiner wants you to do loops it's up to him and you but there's no required form..

I'd like to know also...

Firstly, Why consult Lasors 2005? 2006 has been issued and is freely available on the CAA website (UK) in PDF form.To answer your question ....
Lasors 2006 says....
RENEWAL OF MULTI-ENGINE PISTON
(LAND) CLASS RATING
Where licence holders have been unable to renew a
MEP (Land) Class rating for a period not exceeding 5
years from the date of expiry, they will be required to
complete the following requirements:
i) The CAA will require no mandatory additional
training. Applicants should complete training at
their own discretion sufficient to pass the
proficiency check.
ii) Pass a proficiency check in accordance with
Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.240 with a JAR
Authorised Examiner. For renewal of an
instrument rating if held, please refer to Section
E1.5.
iii) A UK Authorised Examiner can sign the Certificate
of Revalidation page (FCL150CJAR) within a UK
national pilot’s licence. An Examiner qualified in
accordance with JAR-FCL (in any fully compliant
JAA Member State) can sign a Certificate of
Revalidation page within a JAR licence. The LST/
LPC form, completed as a renewal, should be sent
to CAA PLD.
iv) The CAA will charge no fee provided that the
Examiner signs the C of R.
Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.240 is effectively the CAA form ......

Flight Manual for the aircraft and should be agreed with the examiner.
2) A fully developed clean stall with the applicant recovering on the examiner’s command is required. One other approach stall with the
applicant recovering at the incipient stage as selected by the examiner.
3) Section 3A shall be completed for all SPA class or type rating skill tests or proficiency checks unless:
• Section 3B is completed, or
• To revalidate a type or ME class rating, VFR only, the required experience of 10 route sectors, within the previous 12 months has
been completed.
4) The starred (*) items of section 3B, for multi engine Section 6, shall be flown solely by reference to instruments if revalidation of an
instrument rating is included in theTest/Check. If the starred items are not flown solely by reference to instruments the Type/Class Rating
will be restricted to VFR only.
5) Decision Heights/Altitudes and Minimum Descent Heights/Altitudes and Missed Approach Point for each procedure should be
determined by the applicant.
Examiner Guidance (Full guidance is contained in Standards Doc 14 and the Flight Examiners Handbook)
6) Assess items flown at the first attempt, or following completion of an incomplete first attempt, under the column ‘Attempt 1’ and those at
the second attempt under the column ‘Attempt 2’.
7) Mark passed items with a tick or Pass. Mark Failed items with Fail.
8) When a proficiency check on a single pilot aeroplane is conducted in multi pilot operations the Type/Class Rating will be restricted to
multi pilot operations in accordance with JAR-FCL.
9) Should an applicant choose to terminate a skill test for reasons considered inadequate by the examiner the applicant shall retake the
entire skill test. If the test is terminated for reasons considered adequate by the examiner, only those items not completed shall be tested
in a further flight.
again freely available on the website in PDF as form SRG\1157 just do a search and download the pdf. If you download the form it makes for much easier reading and it will be used by the examiner as his guide for the items to be covered. If YOU feel you need further training before the check feel free to get in touch and I can get hold of a very cheap seneca 1 with nice new engines and props leather interior etc for less than £200 solo!

All the best........
