BAC1-11?

Living near Bath I see aircraft en route to both RAF Lyneham & Bristol A/P. Even the odd VC10 & Lockheed 1011 which makes a change.
Today I rather thought I saw a 1-11 (red tail-fin). It looked like one of the non-500 types, that is smaller.
Optical delusion, or do these still fly?
My last journey in one was ages ago.

Yes, Boscombe still fly 3 (2 with Qinetiq, 1 with ETPS) and there are around 22 still flying worldwide (figure changes daily!!).

You probably saw the ETPS one which is a 475 version.

Yeah, I think the -475 was British built, but unusual in that it was a -400 series fuselage with a -500 series wing. Still had cr@p engines though :rolleyes:

ps Cambrian only had -400 series One-Elevens.

Yep, the 1-11 -475 was built in the UK (at Hurn actually) and was desinged to be the version that had rough field capability. It had the -400 series fusalarge with a bulged undercarrige bay to enable the low pressure tyres to be retracted, -500 series wing's (2ft 6in per wing longer than -400) and -500 series engines which gave it the best perfomance of the versions.
Oddly, with the -400 length and -500 wings it meant the aircraft was "Square" 93ft 6in both ways !.

If You are ever near Weybridge in Surrey, Visit the Brooklands Museum and see the prototype 1-11-475 G-ASYD (also was the prototype -400, -500 and -670!)

Hello Interestedparty,
Strange you should mention seeing possibly a BAC1-11 over Bath the other day. There was a red tail (40 years service) VC10 that departed Filton after
its respray the other day. I would take it that it was on its way back home to Brize Norton. Its nice to know that two Great British birds are still flying!!

:) Just returned from Muscat, Oman. on the apron at Seeb airport were 3 Bac 1-11's, which I believe were Omani registered. Couldn't see that clearly though.

You are correct there are at least 3 Oman Air Force a/c. However, I should imagine that they cannot have to much air time left and must surely be up for replacemnt. There demise may have something to do with BA scrapping ite 1-11 sim as Oman have been the only customer for many years.

I think Im right in saying the 3 Omani aircraft are operated by the air force and have been for the past 30 years.........
Recall they were visitors to Masirah in `76. All fitted with freight doors and seem to recall one was badly damaged by a LOX fire, shipped back to UK and rebuilt

A red tailed 1-11 came over the house the other day going into Bournemouth. It looked like it had a very pointy nose, Nice to hear the noise again, even on the approach!

There was an all grey one above here (near Bath) yesterday.
Bumps and circuits at Lyneham maybe?
