The two jet fighters, based in the northern city of Leeuwarden, set off a sonic boom as they sped to intercept the Boeing above the northern Netherlands.
Are UK a/c authorised to exceed Mach One on intercepts over land?

I guess only military fighters above/below a certain FL 'in an emergency'
Cop cars can exceed the speed limit when responding to an emergency, vehicle familiarisation or end of shift;)

They can be authorised supersonic over land in specific cases. If I tell you more I have to kill you:sad:

A '56 Chevy? That only had a 265 cu. in. engine with a four barrel; the '57 was much faster with 283 cu. in. and fuel injection.
Personally I prefer the '69 Dodge Charger; 440 cu in and two four barrels!

A 440 '69 Dodge Charger? R/T, 500, Daytona, or SE? No I'm sorry but if you are going to insist on being specially authorised to go supersonic overland it'll have to be to 'out run' a Plymouth Barracuda. The '68 A-body Super Stock 426 Hemi package should do the trick.

Have to agree Germstone.
Rental cars have been proven time and again to go places a 4 wheel drive would not dare.

At or above a transition level of 3500ft on a QNH of 1013mb where the temp is 15degC or more - probably yes:8
