View Full Version : Unwanted pop-up...only on PPRuNe

Is anybody else having this problem? Since this morning the following window pops up every few seconds, both on my main PC and my laptop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Mearns/WINDOWQUERY001.jpg

It only occurs when I'm on PPRuNe and is obviously another aviation site.

Spybot, AdAware and NortonAV give a clean bill of health to both computers and I have not used my laptop for the past two weeks until just now when I checked if the problem was on both machines.

Any ideas?

Just had one. I closed it and it hasn't reappeared.:suspect:

Same thing here. Seems to be when an ad for them appears in the top righthand corner.

Bloody annoying thought.

:)

Yes indeed, same here but cannot get rid of it permanently. I tried excising it through MS messenger, to no avail.
May have a remedy tomorrow when whizz kid comes home for munch. Will post any positive report as approriate.

I seem to remember a moderator saying some years back that no pop-ups were allowed in PPRuNe advertising. Looks as though this one has slipped through and no doubt it will be axed once a mod sees it...hopefully?

When mine popped up it had my email address all ready filled in! Anyone else had that?

I've just logged back in and it appeared straightaway.

In the 10 minutes since then, it has appeared 3 times and it is really annoying.

Hope they do get rid soon. :*

(No e mail address on mine though - it just appeared again)

I had recently cleared my cookies and it popped up when I was signing in.

It must read some registry as the drop down box showed my current e-mail address and a previous address.

It appears to be asking for your MSN Passport username and password. I can't see any reason for a legitimate site to be asking for this. Mods, this needs to be jumped on ASAP. 1. It's very very annoying and 2. It looks damned like some kind of phishing to me.

I've reported the problem by email to Admin.

I keep getting the same. It's possibly a phishing line, by the looks of it.

It even appears when I click the "back" arrow.

Not seen it (yet?).

Could it be that I'm using Firefox and none of the above are?

I got a couple times using Firefox. :hmm:

I can't stand it - it is coming up more frequently the longer I stay on Pprune. :ugh:

Thanks for the reports to 'admin'. The breakdown service has been called out. Apologies for the inconvenience. It seems that the web site requires secure access and since the banner ad URL is on the web site.....................

Edit: 1820: Thanks Funky - just to confirm - this is NOT a 'po-up' but a secure server access panel. Pop-ups remain 'off limits' here.

Possibly just the server which one of the ads is hosted on has been password-protected by mistake?

Edit: aaah, a minute too late on my post :D

OK.... calm down, calm down! There is no conspiracy to phish any details from anyone. As has been mentioned, it would appear that the advertiser has somehow password protected their website to the point that all public access areas have been locked out too. The directory for their banner and all the images on their website has suddenly been password protected.

I've suspended the ad until they can rectify the problem.

As for the hand wringing cries of "foul play", please... gimme a break. There are no pop-up ads on PPRuNe and no-one wants your hotmail account details. If your browser is automatically seeding blank forms with your hotmail passport details it is your browser and your computer settings that need looking into.

The only pop up that I have ever had on Pprune, occured the other week when perusing the Caption competition over on Mil.

;)

Dear Danny,
I cannot understand a word you've written about pishing or hotmail browsers, but I know a young man who does. Anyway, thank you for so speedily dealing with such a dire situation.
