Thinking of heading to Belgium this weekend, particularly keen to see Bruge. Google Earth suggests that the nearest airport is Ursel (EBUL) which appears to accept ga. Anyone been there or know how customs works from the UK to Belgium?

Used Ostend (EBOS) for a day trip to Bruges some years ago from Wycombe. About 20 mins by train if I remember correct, after a short bus/taxi ride into the town centre.

Are the landing fees crazy in a large airport like Oostende? Do they take 4-seaters?

We flew there two weeks ago in a 182, landing fee was 23 euro at Ostende. straight forward. a buss ride to the train station and a 5 minute train ride and you are at Brugge. Reading up on Ursel, it iwas only available to there club aircraft, don't know why that was in there.

Ursel doesn't have customs, so you would need to land at Ostende first.

Ostende is fine for GA, and the landing fees are what you would expect for a 4 seater (generally better than the UK, I think).

I think Ursel is PPR, so you need to ring them anyway - English will not be a problem.

If you do fly in to Ursel, remember you will still have to go via Ostende on the return to non-Shengan UK.

I've flown into EBOS several times, once to visit Brugge (don't forget they are Flemish not Walloon in this part of Belgium) but from Jersey.

The airport are very helpful from the marshaller, met, air traffic, big self briefing room, customs to all landside.

I parked a PA28 there about 3 years ago for 5 nights, due to storms and was helped with concrete blocks to ensure my steed didn't run away (the one that arrived that night was a super powerful doozy).

The landing/parking fee came to just over £16.

If you want fuel you need to check which supplier you need.
When I was there last, BP would only accept aviation cards, but Merlin accepted all major credit cards, created about a 30 minute delay.

You can go by bus to the station by the port and then the next stop on the train to Brussels, or, you can go by taxi for around £25 - 35.

When I stayed in Brugge it was at the Sofitel, on the edge of the medieval centre, opposite the water feature with the mermaid that squirted water from her nipples.

The restaurants are very nice all around there, and for TinTin buffs there is a TinTin shop just off the market square.

Chokolade is a must in this part of the world, as is Jenever (Gin) and not forgetting Bier.

Can't go wrong in Brugge, but if you can, also spend a night in Ostende I was pleasently surprised when I had to overnight there: a lovely pub attached to a small hotel called the kleine bottletje - a menu solely dedicated to booze, especially gin.

Have fun.

Do they take 4-seaters?

We had to hold for a 747 on the ILS, and then another 5 mins or so for wake turbulence - don't think a 4 seater will bother them!

We flew over for August Bank Holiday last year, a few points:

Check out Nigel Webb's fantastically informative piece here: http://www.polestaraviation.com/?p=24 particularly his information about landing long / short depending on runway in use.

We were collected in no time by a friendly chap in a "follow me" - getting through customs took all of 2 minutes, and we were outside in a deserted terminal!

We got a taxi to Brugges - big mistake at 80 Euros - as everyone else has said, the train / bus combination is far cheaper.

It worked out at about £50 for the landing fee, departure fee, and 36 hours parking inour C-172. Best advice would be that if you need fuel, get it upon arrival - we had to wait for 40 minutes while they fuelled a DC-10 and almost missed our dpearture time for the flight plan.

Have a great time - it was one of the best wekeends we've had, and particularly difficult to achieve.

DW.
