Designation For F-35 JSF

The Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-nuF35_30bus.ART.State.Edition1.1351c695.html) reports that the list of names being considered for the JSF has been whittled down to six finalists.

Lightning II - proposed by both the USAF and USN.
Spitfire II - proposed by the USMC.
Cyclone - proposed by the USAF.
Reaper - proposed by the USAF.
Black Mamba - proposed by the Dutch.
Piasa - proposed by the Danes. (a mythical man-eating bird in the mythology of the Illini Indians of Illinois).

The UK proposed the Fury, but the name, apparently, risked a trademark conflict with the Plymouth Fury automobile. (No reason the UK couldn´t still use it though - just as they call the Eurofighter the Typhoon, even though the other nations don´t use the name).

Hmmm - have they contacted Dyson about the Cyclone trademark?

They seem determined to name something Lightning II don't they.... Why did they drop that name for the F-22 btw?

So the F-35B could be the 'Cyclone B', eh?

That won't help them sell many to Israel.......

Would anyone seriously call it the 'Black Mamba' in these PC days?

Why not the 'Manta'? Or is there something already called that which the spam spooks don't want us to know about? Is a TR-3A really just an historic sports car......??

The truth is out there.....

Can´t see them picking Spitfire but, if they did, I presume the RN F-35Bs would be Seafires......

Perhaps they also want to go on a 'research' trip to Ann Summers before they pick 'Black Mamba' too....

"Gentleman - here's your new pentrator.... STOP sniggering at the back!":}

Piasa - what on earth were the Danes thinking?

"just as they call the Eurofighter the Typhoon, even though the other nations donŽt use the name"

They (apart from the Germans) do use the Tifone/Typhoon name, actually.
