View Full Version : Low flying complaint

At last! I've found a suitable venue for my rant.... I moved to East Anglia twenty years ago and have long intended to express my concerns about military low flying. I don't have any faith in the pen-pushers to address my complaint in a constructive manner. In particular, I feel I must express concerns about Buccaneers, A-10's and Jaguars: I have invested considerable amounts of hard earned £££'s on my idyllic property in the East Anglian countryside and I'm not best pleased! Rather than be flamed by you all perhaps I should give you the specific detail of my displeasure..... My precise complaint is in relation to low flying fast jets ( the lack of them) :{ I chose East Anglia as my place of abode for various reasons and the presence of lots of military airfields was one of them. Since arriving I have witnessed the end of flying at the Woodbridge/Bentwaters bases, the demise of Buccaneers at Honington and now they've taken away our beautiful Jags and closed our last BofB station! This tax payer does not feel that he's getting best value !
I even chose a property under the NE stub of the Wattisham MATZ.... (Bring back those Phantastic F4's !!!) right next to a 1000ft mast which makes an excellent waypoint. Furthermore, I'd appreciate advance warning when you do (on the odd occasion) manage to pop across here as the cat gets upset when I throw him off my knee to enable a quick exit through the door to check out the heavy metal.

Yes - but why SHOULD he have to move house for that? Surely his location is enough.................................? Just mind the mast.:)

AV8R, I thought it was just me. Its about time my MP got a stern letter complaining.

Back in the 80s you couldnt hold a decent conversation in LFA 3 for the sound of Her Majesties finest Gaz pieces @ 43,700 revs "doing a Pinex M'Lud", or a proper PFL to overshoot a field in IF Area A. We took those halcyon days for granted, the smoke of a distant F4 chasing his oppo round the edge of Dartmoor, the jinking of an A10 from 90 AOB L to 90 AOB R. Was he wearing white gloves or olive drab ? what was written on the dymo tape on his bone dome.....

Nowadays all work is stopped, all bartering put on hold and we lean on our shovels even if a Merlin happens to chance over at a FL or two. Bring back the Cold War.......... we miss you.

Would a decent FLY NAVY logo painted on the barn roof do the trick ??

You need to employ reverse psychology - try 'Why don't you bu99er off and annoy someone else'. That should have them around in minutes, especially if you post a rough location. You won't get them in droves, though - we don't seem to have enough airframes to form a drove anymore.

A while back, whilest skiing in Tignes, I was given a drunkenly sketched map on the back of a bar mat. It was the location of a barn in Devon, somewhare west of Tiverton or Taunton I can't remember which now, with a RAF roundel on the roof.
Used the map in a scenario given to 3 ac to try and find and report back as to message the "local friendlies" were trying to pass. Worked a treat just can't remember where it was exactly and have lost the sketch.
Anyone know the one I mean?

I think it's the one in Wales which featured on here just a short while ago.

ah yes the late 80s early 90s were the days, seeing buccs, F111s spark varks and tonkas streak across my village at 250 ft in fourships or sometimes even two four ships maybe a min apart or watching the phantom ops at luechars from kirshawdy beach, ah .... they were the days

oh off topic is anyone aware the RAF fast jet fleet in 2006 is only one squadron short of being the size of the RAFG fleet in 1989 kind of says something.....

The one we found was definitely in Devon or Cornwall.

Ah - the good old magnetic Mendlesham mast! Happy days - of spotting the glint of a low level F-104's wings from above and roaring down to catch him in one of 56F's finest F-4s. Tucked in behind with him squarely in range in the LCOSS as we crossed Stowmarket going rather well and rather low! Of getting airborne straight into a furball with 4 Harriers doing an airfield attack and scattering them like confetti by aiming at the middle of them! Of chasing off after 2 Tornados as they flew down the runway.....500KIAS and Fox 2 x 2 for the Taceval film debrief (MCS hadn't come on line in time, so they were visual 'winder kills!), then off to check in with Neat as C400! Of airfield attacks for the benefit of the Bloodhound folk - until Jonthany went a bit too low and a bit too fast and shook OC Ops off his perch in the tower!

And you liked us doing all that and making East Anglia shake and quake? Wish we'd known at the time!

So sorry that all you get nowadays is the clatter of the dung-eaters in their infernal egg-beaters.

There was a bloke in East Bridgeford (1 mile east of RAF Newton) who used to complain about aircraft flying over his house all the time. (They were only Bulldogs!) Then, when it was decided to close Newton and use it instead to house 3000 asylum seekers, he started complaining about that too... Some people are never happy. (That's exactly what Jesus said...)

Remember many years ago in an F4 mud-moving Nav Room the 'Low Flying Complaints League Table' and the sideline 'Are You Doing Your Job Properly'.

Those were the days when the UK really suffered - shame we didn't know where it was appreciated.

Best bet would be to move near Old Warden in Bedfordshire. Then you'll have a wonderfull mixture of sounds to enjoy. Sopwiths, Hurries, fokkers, and a Gladiator. And they'll even get the odd fj beating up the airfield.

My folks live in Maulden in Bedfordshire and the next village (Clophill) has or had a retired RAF pilot living there. The aircraft that he managed to get to turn up for the air fete were unbelievable.

They must have been on a small divert but to see the BoB memorial every year fly past and do a quick turn, followed by the Vulcan bless it, harriers, tornados A10's, F111's and most impressive of all was a B1 blasting past tipping over hitting reheat and pulling a tight circle between out house and the woods nearby. The noise I will never forget.

We were quite lucky as we regularly had Wookers, puma's and the odd stunt pilot using out area as a waypoint.

Now I live in Bracknell and all of the military stuff has to give us a wide berth for poxy civillian jets in heathrow. My only pleasure was the 7:00 flypast by concorde each night and the buggers managed to get that stopped as well.

Not sure a 1000' mast is a good turning point:ooh:

I think the fact that you're under the stub of Wattisham is the main reason!
Not alot of tactical flying to be had down in that neck of the woods.
If I have the gas on an upcoming GH trip, though, I'll see what I can do. Can't promise much warning though!

Can't offer you anything as noisy as I could back in the good old days but I've got your house marked on the map now about a mile north of the big sticky up thing, feel free to wave.
