Upgrade (http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?ContentBlockID=1124ca47-0c9a-494f-8ce1-78032deac235&) for the C-5. This project dates back to early Clinton days!

Wish I could have stuck around long enough to fly it. It is years behind schedule, should have been done with the "B" models in the Reagan years.

Interestingly, they got the total numbers right--111 now after the April hull loss at Dover. 126 survived as of 2003, then 14 were sent to the Boneyard; 131 were originally produced.

Tremendous improvement in take-off perf, flys about 4-6000 feet higher than the old engines and burns 10% less.

When they put CFM56's (aka F108's) on the KC-135, the squadron level troops changed engines so seldom they lost the expertise.

With CF6-80C2 time-on-wing averaging 10000 hrs. or so, this same phenomenon may happen to C-5 techs. (The engine is derated for the C-5 installation, so I hear, so engines should last even longer.)
