View Full Version : My knob is really stiff... MikeJeff 12th May 2006, 09:24 ..on my radiator of course... any ideas on how to move it so I can switch the bloody thing off? Solid Rust Twotter 12th May 2006, 09:30 Hit it with something big and heavy. GearDown&Locked 12th May 2006, 09:43 http://www.cosgroveaircraft.com/newmarketimages/small_wd40.JPG surely not 12th May 2006, 09:47 Crikey you've got yr knob stiff at last and yr complaining!! Follow Rusty's advice...................... use yr stomach, though thinking about it that's just big!! whiz 12th May 2006, 10:12 Be careful how you grasp it, especially if using stilsons or something similar. Too much twisting torque and you could spring a leak  timmcat 12th May 2006, 10:16 One is not going to reply to this thread on the grounds that others will expect me to. ...bugga :\ G-CPTN 12th May 2006, 12:31 Look carefully at the construction of the valve. Remove the knob and you SHOULD see that the central spindle has a 'gland nut' surrounding it. loosening this will ease the resistance on the spindle (at the expense of a SLIGHT leak through the valve. By all means squirt some of the aforementioned WD40 around the junction of the gland nut and the central spindle (you MIGHT be able to fully unscrew the gland nut without INITIALLY inducing a leak, but be prepared for a leak to develop (cured by tightening the gland nut) after freeing the valve. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! 12th May 2006, 12:32 ...or you could just buy a new one gas path 12th May 2006, 12:47 That'll teach yer fer windin' the thing fully open!:= With any tap or gate valve not in regular use, always open it fully then back it off by half a turn:ok: Windy Militant 12th May 2006, 12:48 Have you tried the Knob at the other end of the radiator. Just in case it's the Lock shield your trying to turn instead of the control valve. :O Oh yeah and as for gland nuts leaking if you've got graphite packing no amount of tightening will stop the leak in fact it will probably make it worse. Best bet get down to your local hire point get a pipe freezer and change the valves putting a thermostatic one end and a proper lock shield with a PTFE gland seal ont other. :ok: Dr747 12th May 2006, 17:19 Use any lubricant that you like and then use twisted motion, but be patient it mightg take a few minutes before its works...if this does not work then ask a plumber to give you a hand. :ok: P.S I was talking about the radiator, you dirty minds:= tilewood 12th May 2006, 19:23 My past life flashed before my eyes when I read the title of this thread! Radiator?!! Yeah, right!! ;) G-CPTN 12th May 2006, 19:26 Don't pull it off . . . tall and tasty 13th May 2006, 00:43 well I suggest you get someone to take a firm grip of said knob making sure that you don't let your hand slip off the end and gently twist. The firm grip and gentle action should make is move slowly into the required position. If there is any problem with it maybe a bit of lubricant around the base, and make sure there is no leaks or air trapped in the system when you turn it back on or you will get a load of knocking noise and reduced productivity in the winter time. :ok: TnT:E Loose rivets 13th May 2006, 06:25 I was going to say that it would be difficult to better G-Cptn's answer, but having read TnT's, bollox to plumbing, I'm off for a......another drink.:D I'm clapping....I'M CLAPPING!!!! tilewood 13th May 2006, 07:07 TnT: My ballcock seems to be part of a very shaky erection.... any advice?! :hmm: chadwick 13th May 2006, 15:31 I too, have a problem with my plumbing TnT:E airship 13th May 2006, 15:54 Radiators must be female then, if they've got knobs...like rheostats?! I was always under the impression that males were more like push-buttons... ;) Paris Dakar 13th May 2006, 19:11 MikeJeff, Is your knob sorted yet? The reason I ask, is that I'm having a bit of bother with my cock. Mrs Dakar has been complaining of low water pressure, so after locating my cock (it took some finding I'll tell you) I tried to turn the hand grip but it's stuck! Now not wishing to damage the stop-cock I'm reluctant to use force on it. Will lubrication (WD40) help me in this matter, or is the problem likely to be lying deep inside my cock? :D tart1 13th May 2006, 19:34 'Will lubrication help?' Yes, I think it is fair to say, based on the replies here (and my own limited knowledge) that lubrication helps most problems............in plumbing and other life situations!! :E tilewood 13th May 2006, 19:39 'Will lubrication help?' Yes, I think it is fair to say, based on the replies here (and my own limited knowledge) that lubrication helps most problems............in plumbing and other life situations!! :E Tart1. You are right as always. It's Saturday night and my plumbing may develop problems. Consequently I have ordered a tub of goose grease! And it's all down to you. Thankyou!! :hmm: tall and tasty 13th May 2006, 19:46 Consequently I have ordered a tub of goose grease! when I worked at the helis I asked a friend in the industry why the engineers had a large tub on vaseline in the hanger. He said it was a good lubricant and also prevents leaks around joints. So maybe that is a reason to have a tub of that handy too. Once you have loosened the knob a little applied liberaly around the base that joins the main pipe may just prevent any tell tale leaks that may happen when you least expect them especially with activity in the night. TnT MikeJeff 15th May 2006, 11:04 :ugh: Children!! I spent all weekend at the airport and left my knob at home!! beat THAT Mr Prescott!! |
