How likely would I be to get a job?

Hey all,

Once I have my commercial liscense how likely is it that I will get a job in the industry?

I have spoken to several people who have been waiting years to get a job as a pilot in commercial aviation! Is the situatuion in the UK just like the US where pilots are two a penny?

I understand that being younger than others I am more likely to get a job, but at the end of the day what are the chances??

I also heard that in 5 or 6 years there is going to be a shortage of pilots??Any truth in this?

I appologise if this topic has been raised before but I cant find it anywhere!!

I guess you've understood that it's really difficult to say!
It's all up to chance actually. You can do your best to be where rumours are told and just follow up on them. In the meantime, do anything that will make your CV look better than others.
If you're the type that will do anything to get a job and you know it, you've got everything on you side. Those who wait longer for a job are those that are afraid to take what is rightfully theirs. The "head down and go for it" attitude is what does it.
Start from 50/50 and if you know you usually get what what you want, up it to 70/30. The jobs are out there to be had, but you need to be prepared to step on a few toes and use your elmbows to get them!

I'll give you the same advise as my friend gave me when i was in the begining of my carrer. Try to focus at least as much on building a net of contacts as you focus on building hours. With the benifit of hindsight I must say that he was absolutely right. I should not complain, i'm in a big(ish) shiny jet now but i think the road to here had been much easier if i had followed his advice instead of being my stubborn self. at the end of the day a contact in a company is worth much more than a couple of extra hundred hours piston twin. so go out there, drink heavily and socialise with the flyboys in your area. good luck and never give up

oh, and forget uk. look all over the world. forget the pilot shortage, that rumour has been around since adam was the sheriff in town
