View Full Version : Out of place 747

I've posted before about seeing a 747 quite low over Southampton, even though it's unlikely an aircraft of that size could get into Southampton. By low I mean about 2000' and level, not climbing away like most of the airliners around.

Then on Saturday, I was on the beach at Bournemouth and saw a 747 at about the same height flying level above the beach, east to west. It went nowhere near the airport, it just appeared in the east and disappeared in the west, flying dead straight.

Does anyone know whether this is the same aircraft, and if so, i'd be interested to know what it's doing. Just seems a little out of place.

Kind regards

Ginger :)

B747 are based at Bournemouth. Approach would take them over Southampton. Nothing out of the ordinary.

OK, I assumed Bournemouth was too small for a 747. Do pardon my ignorance := .

Cheers,

The aircraft appears to be a short arse SP version 747 operated by Qatar Air.
For more info on this unique variant check out this site

VP-BAT (WW01 - callsign) operates a Qatar Amiri flight from time to time into LHR. It was certainly around last Summer (2005).

I wasn't aware, however, that it was based at Bournemouth. How odd!

WW1 "World Wide" is the owner/lease company that owns it I believe. FD cre usually very well spoken as well. It doesnt fly much.

As a matter of fact, Whisky Whisky One landed last evening (around 21.00 on 20.3.06) at LHR on 09L. Not sure where it came from, though.

Not odd at all really as it's a damn sight cheaper to park it at Bournemouth than it is to park it at Stansted or Heathrow. Has been based here for about 3years and probably flies no more than once a month if that. Chatoureaux in France is a popular destination for it.

WW1 - is Worlwide Aviation Services Inc who own the operating lease and fly it on behalf of one the the members of the Qatari Royal family.

It is not now owned by the Amiri Flight but does do charters for them and I assume it must do work for others particularly with the neutral registration. There are a number of strange a/c in the UK. Two 727's one 8X-BEE State of Burkini Faso that operates charters within the EU and seems to have little to do with the democratic republic & alao N727GG which sports Saudi strip with flag at the door but does general charters for the great and good?
