The Long Island RailRoad in New York have issued an extremely strong video clip in an effort to reduce fatalities at level crossings.

DO NOT watch this is you are squeamish, or of a nervous disposition.

What you will see is a real fatality.

You have been warned.

Naah, not real. Nice build up though

Hmm... I dunno Tarnished. Can happen just that easily, given the dimwittedness of certain members of the public, and I could accept what we saw from that camera angle.

Can't gauge if emergency brakes were applied, given the low speed and almost-zero reaction time for the hapless driver/engineer. And the soundtrack's probably synthetic. To know if it's genuine, we'd "need" to see the same camera about five seconds later. But I doubt I'd want to. :uhoh:

Let's hope it sends something of a message, at least.

There is a video out on the net filmed by a spotter who catches a similar scenario on video except the parked train is on the near side, the people assume the bell an gates are for the this train, when an unseen freight train at full speed comes from left to right from behind the parked train, a man manages to stop about a foot away however a woman who was running a bit faster and doesn't see it (as the man is in her way) steps right into it. Once you see that vid you won't go anywhere near a crossing while the bells are going.

I couldn't click the link. :\

Imagination is worse than reality, sometimes.

.....or better. Depends on the topic. :E

CCTV footage is usually grainy at best. This clip is of high quality and I think its a very clever video which works with its shock effect.

Perhaps Drapes, who used to install CCTV would care to comment.

Interesting to note that American trains drive on the same side of the road as us. At least Napoleon didn't interfere with the railways!

Any chance of the Americans reverting to the 'proper' side of the road for driving their cars and lorries, too?

The video is real. It was taken from a camera monitoring the level crossing.

The fatality was also real.

I doubt whether it is actually real- out of respect to relatives. The video quality is too good for an open air camera- this is top quality vid stuff not your shop monitoring/security camera stuff. I reckon it's simply clever editing and designed to shock people into behaving.

G-AZUKthat's been shown in one of the reality cop shows, they confirmed that the driver was killed, hard to imagine otherwise.

maybe you could troll through this link (http://ntsb.gov/Publictn/R_Acc.htm). I think it's real because it looks like he flinches at the last minute.

G-AZUK, that happened here in Oklahoma, they had just robbed a store and shot the store keeper. Man and woman in the pickup were both killed. The truck driver was slightly injured.

re the original video;

Almost the exact same thing happened to two girls in the UK who were running to try and catch the train on opposite side of the tracks, when unseen by them a high speed express was coming the other way. Both were sadly killed.

Sometimes we need this kind of thing to shock us out of our comfort zone.

"Sometimes we need this kind of thing to shock us out of our comfort zone."

Some of us don't need it. I still visit the grave of my paternal grandfather, who I never met, tragically killed in 1951. He was a railway worker and a driver broke the rules and reversed immediately after stopping without a rear lookout, knocking over my grandfather. He lived for 24 hours before succumbing to his injuries.

We had a bloke here who got rear ended at a crossing and was pushed under a train. That's why I stop at least 30 yds back, set the handbrake, put it in Park and turn the wheels.

Proof that it isn't always like the movies!

Yep, I saw that cop show with the pickup truck footage. According to the commentary, it was occupied by two teenagers who'd stolen it and were joyriding. Must have been a right mess.

This is the reason why for years we had full width barriers, these cheapo barriers allow people and vehicles to dodge around, simply the railroads fault.

MMEMatty,
That is correct. An identical scenario. Just a small station in Elsenham just across the perimeter from us here in STN. Poor girls didn't stand a chance and all because they didn't stop to think for that split second. Very sad:sad:

Theres a couple of gruesome rail crossing fatalities in the "Faces of Death" video series.

Just apply common sense. Those alarm bells/lights are not installed for fun.

Real or not, pretty creepy, and so easy to happen. The clip reminds me of an old folk song, "Charlie of the MTA".

Had a colleague who'd lost his toes to a railcar in a yard. Shunting, learned after that to give even stationary waggons a wide berth.
