Worldwide Aviation Museums

Just what it says guys and gals.

The question of museums often crops up and sometimes there is a mass of information, sometimes not. The fact of the matter is that there are some wonderful museums all over the world and all with a tale to tell of their charges. Many PPRuNer’s travel the world and it is clear that they like to visit good aviation museums and in the process take some pictures.

This then is the plan. We are looking for the fabulous pictures that abound inside these museums. We hope that own ‘local’ PPRuNer’s can get their museum on the PPRuNe map so that others all over the world can see what they otherwise may not see. Thus giving all aviators and enthusiasts the opportunity to see what is within of the finest aviation museums as well as the more obscure regions of the world.

This thread will be a ‘sticky’ thread and will deal ONLY in museums with aircraft - of vintage, WW1 and WW2 and, of course any aeroplanes. NO competitions, no polls – just pictures with titles to say what they are and any special notes that go with them.

The way it will work is simple. Each thread posted under the WAM heading will have its own sub heading, such as RAF HENDON MUSEUM or YEOVILTON FAA MUSEUM. No aircraft from one museum can be added to another they need to remain ‘pure’ and true to the museum concerned. Duplicate museums are banned. If you have pictures of a museum already showing you can add your own pictures. The mods will have full control on content and quality so don’t be surprised if a picture disappears.

All pictures, and I do mean all, should be presented at one size of 800x400 pixels. Larger sizes will go off page and we will have to remove them OR get you to re-size them, too small and they will look out place.

As far as copyright is concerned they will remain your property and we will accept your copyright on the picture but only in small print. No URL’s or links will be allowed to any other website or personal business. By naming the museum we are giving them space and Danny, therefore PPRuNe, is happy to do that. We will, however, ensure that that gesture will not be abused.

About three years ago I wanted to post a parcel in Bangkok. The nearest post office to where I was staying was in a road called Lat Phrao.

Just before the post office in a courtyard with the usual Honda motorbikes and delapidated stalls I found this defunct coffee shop ! :-

Here are some shots of only a few of the aircraft at this museum. What makes this a striking place is the absolute quality of the exhibits. Most of which fly on scheduled display days.

Yeah Yeah OK. I put them on photobucket and made them 800x600 which doesn't fit their re-size plan so.....like the Camel it is slightly over - it's resize system is probably a bit out.

The B25 WAS 800x600 but how it got back to that I don't know ..................but still!!!!!

I'll remove the thread because I did do it too quickly. Just trying to please you understand. :O :ok:

Good day that was. Especially as, on behalf of PPRuNe, I presented the museum with 6 TSR2 prints signed by 'Bee' Beamont to be sold to make a bit of cash.

PPRuNe Pop, that Me109 has a strange engine - it looks like a Griffin engine! The Me109 DB engine was mounted "upside-down", so that the exhausts were at the base of the cowling rather than the top, as most British & American aircraft were. Is it a hybrid / replica / mock-up for cinema?
Do you have any details about the aircraft you have pics of?
Thanks
SD
Edit - answering my own question it must be a Hispano Buchon!

You got it !!

The Cavanaugh Flight Museum's Me-109 was built in Germany in 1943 and shipped to Spain that same year as part of an agreement for the licensed production of Me-l09s there. Hispano Aviación, under obligation to supply the Spanish Air Force with fighters after the war, was unable to secure any Daimler-Benz DB 605 engines and instead fitted these planes with a British Rolls-Royce Merlin. Designated the HA-1112, this aircraft served in Spain until 1967. The Me-109 is painted in the personal colors of General Adolf Galland, one of Germany's most famous World War II aces. This aircraft has appeared in a number of films including “Memphis Belle”, “The Battle of Britain”, the H.B.O. film “The Tuskegee Airmen” and the British T.V. series “Piece of Cake”.

Found this Caproni at the Boeing Museum in Seattle. Great place with wonderful planes and heritage artifacts but this just blew my mind. The plaque claims this is the earliest fighter known and it is presented un-renovated, just as found.

Chris, the Learfan was private venture by Bill Lear after he sold the Learjet programme to Gates. It was going to be built (whether entirely or in part I don't recall) in Belfast a la de Lorean wuth UK Government funding, but was stymied by Bill Lear's death in about 1979. Good looking aireyplane!

PP Radar,

Being pedantic, wasn't the Buccaneer built by Blackburn?
Seem to remember the ASI was a horizontal tape a la vauxhall viva speedometer which cheered up a mate who worked for them in Luton when I pointed out that as the Bucc was designed in the 50's & the Viva in the 60's technically the viva used aerospace technology :ok:

When I first started this forum, I had no idea that it would get as good as it is now. Everyone has shown immense interest in it, and your contributions to it have been truly impressive. You can step back and feel proud of that. Thank you very much from ALL of us at PPRuNe HQ.

So, I also came up with the idea of a thread for World Museums and all the 'treasures' they hold, I thought we would get a massive response but sadly we haven't. I wonder now if there is a reason for that. If there is we would certainly like to hear about it. But for sure there are many museums we haven't even heard of! And for sure there is someone living 'there' who can give us more pleasure if we can see within.

As you can see already in this thread, there are fabulous aeroplanes in the museums we have seen so far but it would be a joy to us all if we can get more pics from the hundreds of museums in the four corners of the world.

How about it! Let's get the digitals out and get more pics into the thread. We even have a post to tell you how to do that. And btw. 800 x 600 is great but not more. 640 x 480 is a bit small.

Thanks very much from me and Evileyes.

We don't have a limit St... but obviously we would like the contributions to be selective - a dozen or so per museum would be acceptable but if there are special pics then go right ahead and post.

Great stuff!

Interesting that the Bestmann carries a swastika - I thought such things were now banned in Germany - certainly the two or three WWII Luftwaffe kits in my collection have the artwork altered on the box, and the relevant decals removed from the sheet. Do you recall if the 110 carried one as well?

PP Radar,

Being pedantic, wasn't the Buccaneer built by Blackburn?

Being really pedantic then ... it was originally designed by Blackburn (who were absorbed by HS in 1960) and they did build some examples, but the aircraft you see in the pic was built by HS in 1966 :ok: ;)

Treadders, I thought that by 'borrowing' only one then it might not be noticed! And we could have chosen one with a realistic chance of us affording to get her airworthy!

Alright then if you're going to be greedy, with your list give indications of costs and effort to make each airworthy. PLUS more importantly, your source of wealth to carry out the work!! (You can pm me with this last detail, no need to let the others into our secret:E )

Cough, sorry, got distracted by an invitation for a lunchtime drink... Speaking of which PPP, I saw your missive; I will try and head over you way week after next...

Right here's my attempt based on nothing but a fecund imagination:

First batch:

1 - We all know that one!
2 - No idea but it's very pretty - an Arado perhaps?
3 - I reckon it's part (or a replica) of a Ju288?
4 - Bucker Jungmann
5 - No idea
6 - Something by Lilienthal?
7 - Looks familiar but any pretence at fecundity proved infertile (eh?)
8 - See No 6
9 - Klemm Kl-107 (or a Bolkow 207)
10 - Rheine Flug B-thingumnyjig (but the DNA is something like Bergfalke glider?)
11 - Storch - well you all knew that...
12 - Bucker Bestmann
13 - A VI and a Godknowswhat...
14 - Me110 and Fokker Steiglitz
15 - Me108 (or a Nord 1002)

Second batch:

1 - Arado ( I think a 75?)
2 - me109
3 - MiG 15 (or a 17? My MiG knowledge is shaky...)
4 - Hmmmm, I'll bet its flight characteristics are interesting
5 - Ju-52
6 - Dassault Flamant
7 - A Klemm...
8 - Another Klemm (well it says so...)
9 - Ditto
10 - Perhaps a Halberstadt?
11 - It's that Dak again!
12 - Perhaps another Halberstadt - if TD&H and I can only liberate one, that's the one I want - and I'll bet he'll pick something else...
13 - Me109
14 - Sabredog...

Well that’s the voting from Croydon - now I stand to be corrected on most!

Most of them way over my head! [Figuratively speaking!]. However,

Batch 1 No 3 I reckon is the engine/gear part of FW200 Condor [the unusual leg config gives it away].

Batch 1 No 12 I reckon is a ME108.

Batch 2 No 3 is a Mig15.

Gleaned off the web:

First batch:

2 - Arado Ar 96
5 - Jeannin Stahltaube
6 - Lilienthal Kleiner Schlagflügel-Apparat (Small wing-flapping machine)
7 - Junkers J4 fuselage
8 - Lilienthal Normalsegelapparat (Standard glider)
13 - Henschel HS 293 flying bomb

Second batch:

1 - Arado Ar 79
6 - Nord NC 702
7 - Klemm 35D
12 - Halberstadt CL IV

TD&H
22nd May 2006, 09:20
PPP, please stop doing that :ugh: to your head, you'll hurt yourself! :}

Treadders I'll agree to the Halberstadt, can we base it at Shuttleworth as a replacement for the LVG the RAF museum stole back? But would you mind adding one of the Buckers as a treat for me? I'll have the aeroplane(s) you can have misery guts HMM.

I admire those who can recognise and name all these types, perhaps it shows I'm not too much of an anorack. However I do feel that this museum is well worth the visit, must find time to get there, and consider this thread an excellent guide to where to go visiting. Thanks.

It is a Douglas BTD-1 'Destroyer' SN: 04959 REG: N7035U. A similar aircraft is being restored at the National Warplane Museum Elmira New York.
It was not a great success. In 1944 some 28 aircraft were built. The programme was doomed as competive designs were anticipated to have superior performance. and the US Navy cancelled the BTD-1 contract and the last aircraft was delivered on the 8th October 1945.

Caught this bird out of place at the Museum of Aviation located just outside Robins AFB. About 1.5 hours or so south of Atlanta, this is the largest USAF Museum outside of Dayton.

Part of the USAF's Museum program, they've got more than 90 birds on display - a lot inside, most of the bigger ones outside. Inside, a SR-71, U-2 share space with a B-29, B-25, P-51, P-40, etc. Outside, the biggest is the B-52D (wingtip in this photo) and a C-124. Other interesting jets include a B-57A (with the EE type bubble canopy), a WB-57 with the gi-normous wing! and lots of Century-series fighters.

I wonder about the the Lightning F.6 in the distance.

Anyway, great aviation museum in an unexpected location.

On our way back from Havasu acouple of weeks ago we made a detour to take the kids to the Evergreen Aviation Museum atMcMinnville OR. Access by road is terrible but it is worth the trip. The building is new (and the first of five,) and custom built, A new Imax opens soon.

Of course the main even is actually too big to get in a frame:

These are not quite common as muck over here but I guess they'd be pretty rare in the UK. They have an uncovered renovated model too.

Your pics are too good to be sized the way they are, and as you use photobucket you resize them to 800x600. If you cannot do it - we can.

Great pics all the same.

Thank you for some great shots.

The thing that strikes me, is that the American museums always go for highly polished/finished floors that then show the aeroplanes off.

Can you possibly name the aircraft please. Some of us don't always know the names. Treadigraph will I expect!

"Fundación Infante de Orleáns" (FIO) is a collection of 30 historical aircrafts still in flight. You can see almost all of them flying every first Sunday of each month (except for January and August) at Cuatro Vientos Airport (LECU), Madrid.

Why the Airliners.net spam ??? Less of it please !

I don't know the reason of that. Maybe it was because I inserted the pictures with the Insert Image tool and that is not allowed as the pictures have copyright. I've removed the pictures and inserted the full links, so I think the problem is already solved.

The road to the museum is also a taxiway for the outlying areas of Ted Stevens International Airport; 50 yards away was this

Was it worth the $10 admission fee? Not the best museum I`ve been to, but on a wet afternoon in Anchorage not a bad way to spend some time.

Their website is quite good (the photos being better for a start)

Lots of interesting stuff in here, including Dakota, Spitfire, Piston Provost etc. Plus also some Slingsby glider products: Dart, Swallow and Capstan.
-All in MAF colours.
I took some pictures there in 2003, but got my ar5e kicked for doing so! However I now have a better understanding of how the country works, and will have a go at asking first with a 'present' for the guide...
I'll be there in a week or so.

Loads of other interesting stuff there, but very badly lit and only some English captions.

Lots of interesting planes, and quite well kept, albeit the building itself is quite stuffy... Admission was cheap (Rp 5000, equivalent to US$ 0.60 in 2004), and for those who want to take photos, additional Rp 2000 per camera.

Here are the only two complete aircraft the RNZAF Ohakea museum has.
Inside there are many exhibits showing the aircraft, activities, and history of Ohakea since it opened in 1939.

Regrettably the museum is going to close next month because the trustees say the buildings are in need of refurbishment, and they are not prepared to go ahead when the RNZAF have indicated they will want the land in the relatively near future.

Any of the old members of 75, 14, or 2 squadrons who see this, know that much of their crewroom memorabilia is in the adjoining cafe.
If you want to lay claim to anything, better be in quick.

I’d like to second ChrisVJ comments on the Greenville Aviation Museum in McMinnville OR. Visited there recently and I was very impressed with both the building and the exhibits.
For those of us familiar with the size of 474’s the ‘Spruce Goose’ does not overwhelm, but ChrisVJ’s excellent first photo puts it in context.:D The DC3 under the port wing almost looks like a scale model, but I can assure you its not, and the tiny Sopwith Camel parked under the nose of the ‘Goose’ is a full size replica!
As ChrisVJ states it is a little difficult to get to, but if you’re in the Portland area, its well worth the effort.:ok:

ChrisVJ says:
No US museum is without a Curtiss of some sort, (or two or three, )

The McMinnville Curtiss is a Robin - a late one with the (Continental?) radial. My dad soloed in a Robin in 1930, although it had a WWI surplus OX5 V8 water-cooled engine. All of 80 HP, although with a prop well-matched to the low airspeed and RPM.

But engine failure was not merely a training exercise - The OX5 had a single magneto and external valve rockers, so there was plenty of realtime practice in forced landings. This practice stuck with Dad pretty well, because on his very last flight 72 years later, he had carb ice on downwind leg and landed dead stick - "no big deal!" :)

Tut Tut Tut...
No one seems to have mentioned Ireland, oh well I suppose its my job (yes a young man, without a PPL looks after an entire Island's aviation heritage on a voluntary level with three other senior people!)

Baldonnel Casement Aerodrome

Located on Irish Air Corps airfield. Contains Allou 3's, Avro Anson, Marchetti's, DH Vampires, A Beechcraft King cockpit, Wright Flyer replica, other such stuff.
Not open to the public, please contact us at HASOI on [email protected] with a request, and your details and we will forward it on to our contact at the museum.

Foynes Flying Boat Museum

Located in County Limerick. Contains worlds only full scale B314 Clipper reconstruction, currently in a dry dock, no plans to see it fly, as well as probably the works most complete collection of flying boat memorablia.
Contact via www.flyingboatmuseum.com (http://www.flyingboatmuseum.com) - or contact us for further details if required. Open to the public.

Dromod Collection

Located in County Cavan/Leitrim, ironnically at a train station still in use along the mainline from Dublin to Sligo? - at the Dromod Station. Collection contains over 15 aircraft (whole) and other cockpits, etc, currently being restored. Be advised it is mostly outdoor and you will need to ask for Philip to give you the tour, so make sure you contact him before heading down.
Contact via http://www.irish-railway.com/ or via HASOI for more details.
National Museum Of Ireland Collins Barracks

Located at the former Irish Military barracks in Dublin City Centre, easily accessed along the "Red" Luas line (Luas = "Speed" = Often crashing tram). Collection contains lots of British and Irish items, such as militaria, weaponry, etc as well as... a DH Vampire and a Miles Magister.
Contact the museum directly at:
Tel: +353 1 6777444
Tel LoCall: 1890 687 386
Tel LoCall: 1890 MUSEUM or www.museum.ie (http://www.museum.ie)

All of the above are excellent collections, most are not as "astectically pleasing" as in most collections, Foynes and Collins Barracks are kept beautifully, but the collections have their own charm none the less.

A Proper Aviation Museum For Ireland?
Thats HASOI's assigned Goal within the aviation community, just as a little plug, if you feel like helping and live in Ireland, or have an interest in Ireland aviation, please do contact us today!

Byron

Hello all,

on the topic of World Aviation Museums/History I find relevant to mention that I have recently acquired appoximately 350 issues of The Aeroplane magazine in chronological order that date back to the early 50's.

Therefore I was wondering if anyone out there could give me some advice on them.

So if anyone is interested in this topic please let me know.

Cheers,

I know Castle has already been done, but here are some pictures from my visit...I used to have some of the USS Midway, but a computer crash erased them :(.

The runway at Castle is HUGE, excellent fun to fly into. It's also deserted and on Unicom! I could have made about six landings on the length of the runway.

Just caught the tail of the Super Sabre out of the corner of my eye whilst driving past. The museum is hidden behind a pub!

Not the best photographs of the aircraft on gate guard due to the weather. The rest of the display was locked away, it being Sunday.

Looks like as complete a list as anywhere! Well done. Looking through my visit to Chiang Mai on 24 June 1990, I noted an F86F "4111" on a pedestal there. Was it replaced by 1991 then?

Mike:It is a RF-84K, the device infront of the cockpit was to enable airborne hookups to a specially modified B36.

The idea was that the B36 would fly a point well clear from the target, then launch the RF-84K to carry out a photo recce while the mother ship remained at a safe distance.

I think one squadron was formed and flew for a while, but did not stay in service very long.

FS-265 is one of the 25 converted RF84Fs, redesignated RF84K, for the FICON project (Fighter Conveyer). That is not a cable cutter but a retractable hook that fitted to a trapeze in a B36 bomb bay. The F84 was taken into the air hooked to the B36 and then released at high altitude to save fuel. The only unit I know of was 91 Strategic recon Sqd in 1955.

Mr. Proachpoint
Can you send any pictures? I volunteer at a WW1 and WW2 museum here in Denver, Colorado, USA.
It was started by Doctor Parks and his son Andy now runs it. Luckily due to a very gracious benefactor we are acquiring and expanding.
We have a few Richtofen items. His 11th victim was a RAF pilot named Hawker. Hawker being the first RAF ace. Richtofen landed next to the Hawker's crashed aircraft and souveniered some of the aircraft and some personal items, including his bible and handkerchief. We have those two items. Also have Hawker's uniform.
I am planning a trip to your area sometime in the future and sounds like I must add this museum to my schedule.

It's part of the Beijing University faculty of Aeronautics and Space which is in the Hai Dan distrcit which is quite close to the centre. The museum is primarily for the students to clamber over the exhibits, but is open to the public for the exhorbitant fee of 4 Yuan (about 28 pence!). There are a lot of aircraft structures there, skinned wings for example for the students to see the type of construction (they even have a Mosquito wing as an example of wood construction). But there are a number of complete aircraft. Mostly Russian and Chinese, but a few suprises such as a P47 in Duxford colours, a P61 Black Widow and a Harrier GR3. The Harrier is in 4 Sqn colours - the next evening I was in the pub with a mate who was an ex-boss of 4. He was very suprised to know one of his aircraft was in Beijing. He's been to see it since.

Those "museums" which are located on US military installations now require non-US citizens (aka foreigners :yuk: ) to apply for access at least 48 hours prior.
I found this out the hard way at Ft. Bragg (Pope AFB) last weekend. Whether you are prepared to undergo a security vetting to simply look at some old aircraft is, of course, a personal decision.

Me ? I won't be going back. :ugh:

The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is located in Auckland New Zealand.
After visiting their site, I found that they plan to hangar their Sunderland.
The Teal Solent Mk IV is restored to static display status and the Sunderland has been sitting outside since I can remember. I have some photos which will follow soon.

To my delight they also have an Avenger that I played upon in my childhood. They just cemented it's feet into the playground and that was the attraction.

I used to fly from Long Marston in 1988. The airfield owners were not interested in anything to do with aircraft [other than the rent I would presume. Main income was Drag Racing and Sunday Market Trading] The Shackleton, and others arrived and were left to rot. I was told a grant was gained to aid a Museum set-up. Can't see where the money went. There was a mad sky diving club that dropped through cloud on a regular basis. I was watching two sailplanes from Bidford circling nearby under a developing cu when suddenly 5 plunging skydivers appeared, one missing one sailplane by what looked like just a few feet.
I moved to Old Sarum shortly afterwards.

Sad to see such neglect at Long Marston.

Spent a lovely day last summer at this museum, just on the outskirts of Ottawa. One of the most interesting aircraft museums I have been to, since it was very well focussed - purely on aircraft that had some relevance to the history of Canada, either in terms of being built there, or of seeing significant service there.

http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/

Quite a few unique specimens - including what little remains of the Avro Arrow:

http://www.tim.j.lee.btinternet.co.uk/27072007006.jpg

Apologies for the shortage of photos, I had a new camera at the time, and I hadn't worked out that it wasn't saving photos properly :ugh:

The hidden secret is the "other hangar" - the museum complex has two enormous buildings, one is the museum itself, the other is the "odds and sods" collection, that an organised tour takes you around. In there, there is a DC9 (AC had loads), a Comet 1 nosecone (guide couldn't explain how they had acquired that one!) and all sorts of great Canadian kit. Too many to list, and in fact even the website doesn't list them for some reason, although they do show up in the Image Bank.

Well worth a trip!

I have some minor stuff to do on the Albatros and Nieuport dioramas .After that it will be coordinating with the museum staff as to how they want to display them.http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif __________________

Hi Everyone,

If any of you find yourselves in the South Island of New Zealand, can I suggest a visit to the RNZAF Museum just outside Christchurch. Very good value indeed, lots of super exibits & very friendly & knowledgeable staff only too happy to offer advice.
I went there last year & bumped into my now rather elderly QFI from the early 60s, who had the unenviable task of teaching me to fly the Harvard.
Certainly a good morning / afternoon out.

Don't forget that CPA (Canadian Pacific Airlines) also operated Comet 1's briefly. I'm not certain they ever achieved scheduled service but, if memory serves correctly, the Karachi takeoff accident was a CPA Comet 1 on a round-the-world proving flight which rotated early and failed to become airborne, due to excessive drag and/or loss of engine thrust.

I believe later Comets had a protruding upper lip on the four intakes to better feed the engines at high AOA. Another outcome of the investigation was the eventual creation of the FAR 25 reg that today requires Vmu (minimum unstick speed) to be demonstrated on all transport aircraft during type certification.

V2-OMG!

Seattle, Washington U.S.A. is a great city to visit for any aviation enthusiast, for these reasons:

- Yes, it is the birthplace of Boeing. The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field has a fantastic indoor display area, plus an outdoor air park. Many of the indoor displays are "interactive" and are enhanced by some very realistic diaramas. For example, the WW1 warbird display has an actual field bunker you can crawl into. The entrance to the WW2 section begins with a trek down a long, dark hallway, while the imagery and sounds of the Third Reich reverberate on a large screen. I like the symbolism of the "long, dark hallway." Were the museum designers thinking of those "long, dark" walks to the gas ovens?

One of the most impressive birds at the MOF is the M-21 Blackbird.
It dominates the main static display area.

Boeing's original "Red Barn" is also affixed to the museum.

The air park features President Kennedy's Air Force One, the 747 prototype, one of the earliest 727s, and until recently, the 707 prototype that Tex Johnson rolled over Lake Washington - in front of 300,000 spectators - and to the horror of all Boeing executives present. "I was just trying to sell your airplane sir." Love it!

- North of Boeing Field is Everett, home of Boeing's wide-body plant, and the newly opened Future of Flight Centre. Boeing still offers tours at its Paine Field plant.

- The Arlington airport also has a great display of warbirds owned by Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen.

To avoid anyone getting lost when trying to get to the Udvar-Hazy part of the Smithsonian's Air Space Museum, here's the latest info. The shuttle coach that used to run between the original museum on the Mall & Dulles was discontinued for lack of customers and you now have to use public transport.

From the museum on the Mall, go out the back door & down to D Street (south under the rail bridge) and then west to the bus stop just before 7th Street. The 5A bus leaves on a slightly irregular schedule , check the latest times at www.wmata.com/timetables/dc/5a.pdf Cost is $3.10 - exact change required but it does take $1 bills.

The 5A bus also stops just north of Rosslyn Metro (nearest metro from Ronald Reagan) about 15 minutes after leaving D Street and then takes about 45 minutes (or more with traffic) to get out to Dulles Airport. The stop is on the lower level by the parking shuttle & other ground transport. The Virginia Regional Transport shuttle to Udvar-Hazy picks up from the same stop, takes about 15 minutes to get there and costs 50c (exact change requested). First bus is at 10.30 & every 45 minutes on weekdays and 11.15 then hourly on weekends. If you miss the bus, it will cost you $10 - 12 for a cab!

Last bus back to Dulles is when the museum closes at 5.30 which easily makes the 5A at Dulles at 6.05.

As seen in the photo above, it's got some unique aircraft so it's well worth the trip.

Small but beautifully formed!

This museum holds some very nice aeroplanes including 2 former world airspeed record holders, but it is the human interest side of the museum which makes it for me.

The wreckage of a Hurricane which crashed in Bognor and was excavated only a few years ago bringing with it the body of the pilot who was finally buried with full military honours in his home town, the stories of the SOE agents who flew out of Tngmere on moonlit nights, many never to return, the garden of remembrance so lovingly cared for by the volunteers and the volunteers themselves so helpful and willing to chat.

A great place to spend an hour or 2 if you are on the south coast.

I have been here in the US for about 4 years now and I have come across the odd bit of British aviation history outside of museums that I have photographed. I thought I would share some of these with the forum in case your interested.

Firstly, not wishing to continuie the discussions that a camoflaged Jet Provost raised on another thread, here are some photos of another camoflaged Jet Provost. This time taken as recently as October 2008 at Salt Lake City. Does anyone know if the code 19 has any significance?

http://i43.tinypic.com/2poa8nb.jpg

http://i40.tinypic.com/ev2652.jpg

Next a couple of Tiger Moth N42DH from an airport very local to me, Van Sant. These were taken in June 2008.

Chipmunk WG430 at the same location. This aircraft still wears the marks of 1AEF.

And finally a Strikemaster wearing an "interesting" colour scheme.

This JP was not camouflaged when in service and, for example, the roundels are not the correct style. Here is a picture of it as it would have been when it left RAF service:

If this aircraft was demobbed from 1FTS ar RAF Linton-On-Ouse, 19 could well have been its 'Fleet Number', IIRC the Mark 3s had low Fleet Numbers and the mark 5s were numbered from 80 Upwards.

XN506 was sold in February 1993. The last user was 1FTS at Linton-on-Ouse where it was coded 19.

It had a long service life with 1 FTS, 3 FTS, 6 FTS, 7 FTS, CFS and RAFC.

It received the avionics up-date and became a T.3A.

It was one of several JP3s used by 26 Squadron, from RAF Wyton?

Not that small ! More like 2-3 days than hours to see everything ( even then you couldn't take it all in - maybe you visited a while ago ).

Exhibits include - outside; Meteor, T-33, Sea Harrier FA2, Sea Vixen, Phantom; soon a Vampire T-11 possibly in running condition.

Inside; Neville Duke's world speed record afterburning Hunter, the earlier world speed record Meteor, Swift, Lightning, Hunter F6, a Hunter F4 cockpit to sit in, perfect replicas of the prototype Spitfire K5054 with R.J.Mitchell artefacts & spare hoods & slipper tanks etc, ditto replica Spitfire 5C, & Hurricane.

3 simulators, one flying a Hurricane in the Battle of Britain, the other 2 offering various aircraft & degrees of difficulty, from a Chipmunk already lined up to land at Tangmere, to flying a Hunter through Tower Bridge ( it was done for real ), a demo' simulator to try following German guidance beams versus the Brit' countermeasures, a display of the significant American input ( + Luftwaffe ! ) Cold War nuclear control bunker demo, the recovered Hurricane of Dennis Noble's as mentioned, a real household shelter, an original airfield air raid shelter open to visit, various engine displays, a pop-up pill box under restoration to working order, an original Ferret armoured car ( now restored 'as new' & running, simply left when the RAF pulled out ! ), a comprehensive library to visit, and a lot more.

For a panoramic view google 'Tangmere Military Aviation Museum' - I'll try to get some decent photo's to put up here.

I'm a volunteer there, and I'm constantly finding 'new' artefacts !

For satnav', the postcode is PO20 2ES, Tel. 01243 790090 - best to call first in very bad weather.

On display at the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum (FAST) there is a preserved nose section from a Trident three G-AWZI. The aircraft served with BEA and later BA from 1971-1985. A dedicated website can be viewed WWW.G-AWZI.CO.UK (http://www.G-AWZI.CO.UK) which gives the aircrafts full history, its retirement and restoration. Also how to become one of the many volunteers at the FAST Museum. The museum is FREE to enter and is open every weekend 1000-1600.

To SU-GCM: The museum at Sharjah is an interesting place, but its contents are not what they seem to be. I described tham at:
l.garey - RAF Sharjah, Al Mahatta Museum (http://l.garey.googlepages.com/rafsharjah,almahattamuseum)

The old Imperial Airways resthouse, dating from 1932, still exists in the middle of Sharjah. Apart from a number of miscellaneous aviation-related items, four aircraft are on display in a hall next to the old control tower. They purport to be four of Gulf Aviation's original aircraft, according to the accompanying notices. At first glance a DC3, a Dove and a Heron, indeed, could have been genuine, but an Anson labelled as a Mark I, but obviously a much newer one, is suspicious.

In fact, Heron "G-ANFE" is actually constructor's number 14072, a Heron 2 originally owned by West African Airways Corporation, as VR-NAQ. It was then registered G-ARKU with Overseas Aviation Ltd. In 1961 it was transferred to the Royal Navy, and converted to a Sea Heron C20 (XR443). Withdrawn from use in 1989 it was sold as G-ORSJ, later changed to G-ODLG. Sold again in 1993 it became VH-NJP with Heron Airlines in Australia. It was acquired for the museum and painted to represent G-ANFE in 2003. There is a constructor's number on a plate just behind the co-pilot's head "14072", and also a hand-written "NJP" on the captain's roof

The Anson "G-AKVW" is ex TX183, built at Yeadon in 1946. It was with Bomber Command Communications Flight at Booker, then Abingdon Station Flight, before moving on to No.1 ANS at Hullavington. It went later to Shawbury, and A&AEE Boscombe Down where its service career finished in 1968. It was then sold to the Shuttleworth Trust, who were planning on a restoration programme, but that never came to fruition. It was registered G-BSMF. The flaps are half lowered, so you can see identity plates on both sides. It is quite clearly marked as "Type no 652A" and Mk XXI on one side and Mk 21 on the other! The flaps carry the dates 22/10/48 on one side and 9/1/51 on the other! Maybe the flaps were taken from a Mk 21, and fitted to this C19 airframe. There is, of course, no way it could be a Mark I, which is a completely different aircraft!

Dove 6 "G-AJPR" was built in 1956; its constructor's number is 04469. It was on the Italian register as I-TONY and then became G-ARDE.

The DC3 "G-AMZZ" has a tiny label on the roof between the pilots "C-GCXE". Otherwise, I could not find any identification plates. In the undercarriage bays there are "RCAF" labels. The aircraft is actually constructor's number 12254, a C47A delivered to the USAF as 42-92452 and almost immediately passed on to the RAF at Montreal as FZ669. It served with the RAF in Canada until 1946 when it was officially passed to the RCAF. Pensioned off 1976, it became C-GCXE with Aero Trades Western. Cancelled from the Canadian register in 1977, it next appeared on the Dominican register as HI-502. Re-registered as N688EA in 1993.

The nose and cockpit of Comet R2 XK655 were added to the collection in 2008. It was the first production Comet 2 (G-AMXA) making its first flight in 1953. It was the first to go to the Royal Air Force. In 1955 it was modified at Marshalls of Cambridge to the Mk R2 electronic intelligence gathering (ELINT) version, and was based in Cyprus with 51 Squadron. It patrolled with experimental surveillance and radar equipment, frequently being detached to Sharjah. When retired from flying it was sold to the Strathallan collection in Scotland. On landing at Strathallan it damaged the undercarriage, but was repaired for static display. When the StrathallanMuseum closed in 1990 it was scrapped with only the cockpit section surviving. It was put on the roof at GatwickAirport in 1995. After spending about 10 years outside it was restored again before shipping to the Al Mahatta Museum as the first jet airliner to land at Sharjah.

On Friday I had the opportunity during a business trip to vsit the Ukrainian National Aviation Museum in Kiev.

Absolutely superb for western eyes, simple descriptions in Ukranian and English. I couldn't find an english speaker anwhere to ask questions, but that was not a problem. Entry fee, equivalent of £0.60. Anyone who wants more information please message me. Many more pictures of other exhibits.

The Museum is located on the perimeter of Zhulyani Airfield about 8km South West of Kiev City centre.

I haven't labelled these in case anyone wants some identifying fun. These 12 are about 1/5 of the aircraft there including a complete Ilyushin civilian line up and a full Mig line up from Mig-15 to Mig-29. For me the highlights were the Backfires and the Bear. Yes, the svelt figure is me.

A superb visit and an ambition fulfilled and, as you can see, gardening is not their forte.

Whilst driving through France this summer I came across a museum in the grounds of a Chateau, I spent a very enjoyable day there.

The Chateau les Savigny, built in 1340, has on display 200 fighter aircraft including Meteors, Vampires, F84s, F100s the complete Blue Angels team, the Patrouil de France team every mark of Russian Mig and far too many others to list.

The Chateau also houses 2,300 model aircraft, 300 motorcycles, and a selection of racing cars. There is accomodation nearby.

The Chateau is open 09.00-18.30 April to October
and 09.00-12.00 and 14.00-17.30 November to March

Entrance costs 10 euros for adults, children under 9 are free.

PS An added bonus is that the Chateau is also a vineyard and produces its own excellent wine!

At Hatzerim AFB, near Beersheva in the south of the country. A superb museum with approx 140 a/c on display. You need photo ID to gain entry however. It's on the edge of a desert, so nearly all aircraft are displayed outside, the sun is nearly always shining and the exhibits don't rot. Here's a simply beautiful Mustang they have on display. Well worth a visit.

And here's a C97 they've also got on display. When I visited the IAF museum in March 2008, I was delighted to see this a/c, as, in April 1974, when I was a keen as mustard 16 year old planespotter, this very machine did two practice overshoots at M/C airport and I saw it. Back then, it was like an apparition from beyond the clouds-an incredibly good "cop." So I was very happy to see it again after all those years.

Further to my posting earlier, I made it to Ratamala in Sri Lanka, their main transport base.

This is a wonderful museum! It is not dogged by a seemingly endless stream of US-produced machinery. There you see machines of style and quality, means and muscle.... British (the quality bit!), Italian (the style bit!) and Russian (the muscle bit!).

Here's one flying example of their exhibits. They also fly Chipmunks and SIAI Marchetti SF260s regularly. The static exhibits include rarities such as a Pioneer, two (yes, two) Balliols, two Jet Provost 51s, various DH machines, MIG-15 and -17 plus two Chinese-built FT-5s, an AN-32, and much more. The non-flying exhibits are wonderful too!!!!

All this is watched at leisure to the wonderous background sounds of Antonov 32s and other types arriving and departing...... Nice, nice, nice.....!

Sorry this shot was hand-held in natural light at 1/50sec.

I forgot to say that visiting is by prior permission only. Details of how to do that are on the SLAF website.

No pics but I was seriously impressed with the hard work the volunteers do. The result is some well kept (as well as they can be in the open) exhibits and some growing new examples inside 3 hangars. There are interactive's like Link Trainers and much more.

It takes hard work to achieve the standard reached, and in this museum the examples are there for all to see. The work is always ongoing.

Well worth a visit. A google will give you the flavour.

I'll post it on Flickr and will then post a link to it here, once I've downloaded it from my camera."

Just had a quick look at their website. It looks like a rather good museum, tho somewhat short on space. Must try to get there, if I ever make it to "down under."

How to upload photos: put them up on eg Flickr, then copy and paste the URL here.

Globe Swift GC-1A. 1946. 85 hp. I quote from the placard:

"Produced from 1946 to 1951, the Globe Swift is a sporty general aviation design whose beauty and superior flying characteristics have made it a favourite classic. The 'A' model was the only multi-seat, complex, nonexperimental aircraft of its time in the United States under 100 horsepower. With its sleek lines and retractable gear, it handles like a fighter and was a major advance over wood-and-fabric designs. It was surprisingly economical to fly.

"Prior to purchase by its present owner, this 1946 Swift spent 20 years in the Swift Museum Foundation collection on display in Athens, Tennessee. It retains most of its alclad skin, early production magnesium engine cooling grille and fabric-covered rudder. The interior is vintage as well, with its art deco-style instrument panel and instruments, cream and blue colour scheme, and original control wheel yokes and seats."

No significant damage to Christchurch museum. The following is part of email I received from them on 15-9-10.

"Thankfully we are all OK and the buildings were
cleared for use last week. No significant damage to collection objects, just
some racking in one building collapsed. One of our suspended aircraft
suffered some scraping and minor dents on one of its tail booms, but that
can be repaired.

A horrible experience, and the aftershocks continue, although they are
settling down and are mostly in the 3 to 4 richter range. Apparently someone
has produced a T-shirt saying 'I don't get out of bed for anything under 6'."

Romanian Aviation Museum

It's bad that for a country with so much aviation history we have a little tiny "museum". More, the romanian state stoled a part of the terrain's museum to build some houses and another part because an in plan highway is passing that zone.

Hello Andy...........

Welcome to the Forum. No one else as stepped up to the plate so here goes. In truth, there really isn't a "civil only" museum in Britain. The civil aircraft that have been preserved are spread across nearly every collection in the UK.

Spent an hour or so at the Indian Air Force Museum at Palam last week. Unfortunately I only had the Blackberry to snap shots with :(. It has lots of interesting stuff - almost exclusively non-US :):) but sadly the exhibits are in poor condition and suffer from the indian habit of hand-painting everything! There also seems to be a virus there - the "Flat Nose Wheel" virus!!!!! Neverthe less it was enjoyable, with the likes of Spitfire, Hurricane, Lysander, Hunter, Mystere IVA, Ouragan (Toofani), MI-4, MIG23 and MIG-25 and more .... Here is the Foxbat...

The hangar's an impressive building and has enabled MoTaT to place a greater number of its aeroplanes on public display, but photography is made difficult due to low lighting.

Please excuse the poor results due to my low budget equipment.

Hello everyone
In writing my book on Bert Hinkler - FAI gold medal winner 1929 - I visited many of the great aviation museums in the world - RAF Hendon, Brooklands, Smithsonian, RAAF Point Cook, New Zealand Fighter Pilots at Wanaka, Australian War Memorial, Science Museum in London.

I have to say that none surpassed the Hinkler Hall of Aviation in Bundaberg when it came to promoting the legacy of the great aviators of the Golden Age.

If you are ever in Queensland it is a must see museum. It recently acquired Hinkler's Avro Baby in which he set world records in 1920 and 1921. Amazing what he achieved ina tiny machine with less power than a modern motorbike

I don't think it's been mentioned thus far, but there are 70+ a/c at the Western Antique and Automobile Museum at Ken Jernstedt airfield, just south of the town of Hood River in Oregon, USA. Access is via the Columbia River Highway, an hour or so east of Portland. Many of the a/c are airworthy and flown and this museum well merits a visit.

Although originally conceived as an "assault" glider which necessitated a compact design, a change in tactical philosophy predicated against the use of small numbers of troops being sent into battle aboard gliders. Due to limitations in its design, the Hotspur was mainly relegated to training where it excelled and became the basic trainer for the glider schools that were formed.

This museum is well worth a visit. The Junkers factory was on the airfield and the hangars are still visible.

Yes, Oberschleissheim is an excellent museum. That Storch, I suspect, is this Morane-Saulnier Criquet re-painted:

They've also got this very nice Dak:

Definitely a Waco cabin model, mid-30s. Not a cheap one either, with that H-S constant-speed prop.

The Waco is the S model NC16512

The other one is the VFW VAK191B experimental VTOL fighter. 1970s.
Next to it is D-9531, a Dornier 31 prototype, also VTOL.

"Proplinerman, do you recognise these two?"

Well, the Waco wasn't there when I visited in 2003, but I saw it four years later at the Hamburg "Airport Days," so I presume it's a flyer. Neither was the jump jet, so maybe that arrived some years after my visit-after all, it's nearly ten years since I went there. Perhaps time for a return visit!

Oh and anyone else visiting Oberschleissheim should take in the Super Connie, DC-3 and JU-52 at Munich airport (a few stops further down the railway line that goes through-and stops at-OberS, but go there in the morning, because, if it's a sunny day, you won't be able to take a "clean" shot of the Connie: ScanImage11 618 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/48975048@N06/5563996963/)

In the late afternoon on the day I visited, the sun was behind the Connie, on the side with the rather unsightly steps.

Your photo 023 - The Curtiss P-6E Hawk - in that livery (the snow owl insignia) is the prettiest biplane ever built. It was rebuilt from a wreck 50 years ago by students at Purdue University under the direction of Prof. Ernest R. Blatchley - I know him well. He intended to make it airworthy, but that would have meant replacing the lower longerons (steel tubing) in the fuselage, and there wasn't the budget for that. The engine is in excellent condition, although missing the seals and gaskets needed to make it runnable. :ok:

I see your P6E (attractive though it is), and raise you a Hawker Hart and derivatives, for the title of the "Worlds Most Attractive Biplane".

Hi all,

New museum on the block down in Cornwall is the Classic Air Force at Newquay Airport (RAF St Mawgan in old money).

We are located in the old Nimrod deep servicing facility, and we are based around the Air Atlantique fleet of classic aircraft, relocated from Coventry, with both static and flying exhibits.

If you are in the area, please come in and visit, for 2 reasons.

One, we need visitors!

Two, we need feedback from people who know what makes a good aviation museum. We are a new operation, and cannot easily draw on the experience built up by the Coventry team due to the distance.

Apologies if this comes across as a sell. It is, kind of, but Cornwall has been a classic aviation desert for years and now that we have something going on, I'm going to push it.

Best regards, Subsunk.

jcr737 :

The a/c identified as a "CT-39A" at Hill AFB is - judging from the "slipper" tank midspan on the wing and the rectangular cabin windows - actually a Lockheed VC-140B JetStar.

It looks like a twin to the one in the VIP hangar at Wright-Patt AF museum.

BTW - misidentification is not terribly uncommon at some museums. The Travis AFB museum has a centrifugal-flow jet engine they called a J-33 IIRC.
My few minutes' inspection of it told me it was a GE I-A (or perhaps I-16), a very early US jet from 1942-43.

Hill Aerospace Museum........Gads, how can they do that?
Its definately a Jetstar and not Saberliner.
Notice the four (4) engines.
Only the first two prototypes had twin engines (Bristol Siddeley Orpheus).

And besides that...it looks completely different and its more than twice the size!

If you have never ventured to this magnificent museum I would strongly recommend that you do. Set on a corner of the original Tangmere Airfield it has grown since its early days of the 80's and is now a really superb example of preserving the memory of the Battle of Britain, and of the heroes that flew from there. Set quite close to Chichester it is a must to see. The exhibits are kept in a condition that is a credit to everyone charged with keeping them in pristine condition. A joy to behold. The history it tells is must to see.

About Tangmere | Tangmere Museum (http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/about-tangmere)

It closes each December and January so that a great mixture of skilled and unskilled volunteers can keep the museum growing and kept up to the high standard they set to make it one of the best aviation museums I have ever seen.

It opens again in February and is well worth a visit.

The link above will tell you all you want to know about this historic airfield.

The excellent photos on this thread remind me of the many photo-opportunities I missed, either by having no camera, film or not being fast enough on the trigger. Like the day the Fairey Rotodyne flashed by at White Waltham. Or the time at Greenham Common the Harrier did a bow right over our heads. And that wonderful moment at Heathrow right behind Concorde when it lit up all four and whispered away. Heathrow again, watching a Stratocruiser start up at dusk with flames and smoke. Vulcan touch-and-go at Cranfield. VC10s at Brize just floating down. A Mosquito low pass at Shuttleworth. Victors at Marham low-flying over the Wolds. A big Blackbird easing into Lakenheath. Bouncy Britannia at Heathrow in a crosswind which required a Caravelle to deploy its tail parachute. VC10 coming in to Heathrow on foam with no nose wheel. BOAC 707 engine fire on take-off, with rapid return. A10s strafing practice over East Anglia. Close-up view of Court Line Tristars at Luton. The first Ryanair there, as well as all those lovely Monarch Britannias. My old Heralds dropping in to Bournemouth for Channel Express. Thank goodness others snapped when I didn't, and for YouTube!

Thanks (?) to the French air traffic strike I was detained in UK a day or 3 extra, and had to blag a bed off friends in Cambridge, so Saturday toddled off to Duxford with the intention of looking at the revamped American Air Museum. Thought it was brilliant, and congratulations to all involved. However, what I was not expecting was the "mini- air display" that I enjoyed. Clearly there are plenty of people ready to cough up the best part of £3k for 30 minutes in the back of a Spitfire 2 seater, because it was like the old joy-riding days with Spitfires instead of Austers. The Blenheim flew twice, and on one flight looking through the camera viewfinder it looked as thought it had suffered engine failure - turned out the dark stream behind was an ashes scattering - RIP whoever that was. The Catalina was flying circuits, and later a Hurricane and Spitfire flew two display practices, as did a Rapide. All the while the Tiger Moths and Rapides were in evidence pleasure flying. Absolutely brilliant day. Many thanks to all
