As most of make extensive use of Maps and charts in flying, I found an interesting DVD on the History of Map Making called...the Map makers.

Ch1 talkes about the Waldseemuller map wich is the first true world chart, and commonly called the birth certicicate of America. interesting point, christopher Columbus didnt actually discover America he discovered teh West Indies and Cuba. It was Amerigo Vespucci who first mapped the coast of Florida 5 years later in 1497.

Ch 2 takes about Gerrad Mercator a familiar name to anyone who had done ATPL subjects.

Ch 3 is about the D Day invasion maps of WWII.

Not strictly aviation related but gives a good insight into the the ancestors of the charts we all use today and well worth a look on a rainy afternoon.

So how does one get hold of this DVD? I'll be back in Oz over Christmas/New Year, if there are any local shops that are likely to have it.

I'm a bit of a mapping nerd, ya see! ;)
