Can anyone help with the identity of a RAF Spitfire in a photo that I have.
I'm no expert but I believe it may be a MK14 as it has the "squared off" wing tips. The aircraft is painted in camouflage and has the markings " X SZ "
I know it is not much to go on but I'm looking for info. on what squadron it may have come from and if indeed it would be a MK14.

SZ was used by 316 Sqn from 1941 until 1946. They operated Spitfire Vb/c and IX aircraft until 1943 when they re-equipped with Mustangs.

Is the aircraft definitely a Griffon engined model? Any chance of posting the shot here?

X-SZ, SZ-X, BL479: BL479 was a Spitfire Vb L.F with clipped wings which, with the low blown Merlin 45 or 50 series engine, produced a fighter mediocre above 20.000 feet, but formidable at low level. It was one of a batch of 1000 built at Castle Bromwich in 1941.

Model: FS98 Supermarine Spitfire L.F.Mk.V (SZ-X)
First flown on 5th March 1936, the elegant Spitfire with Merlin engine entered the RAF service in August 1938 to be heavily committed in air combats in the Battle of Britain. This model, the tenth of Shigeru's Accurate Spitfire Series, is depicted as a clipped-wing L.F.Mk.V with codes SZ-X, s/n BL479, No.316 Squadron, RAF,in carefully and authentically painted dark green / dark sea gray camouflage scheme.

Sorry I'm not that IT literate so can't post a picture here.........however if you don't mind I can send it as an email attachment.
My main reason for doing this is that I've always been around aircraft since a very young lad (4yrs old) and just recently I came across this great photo. I'm having it framed and I'd like to put some history with it.

I agree now we have the evidence. :ok:

Offchocks - the Mk14 was a Griffon development and had the wide chord rudder. Looks a lot more powerful beast than the IVb -

X-SZ on the starboard side.

I'm sure I've seen a colour photo of this same aircraft someplace.

This 4" x 6" colour picture of BL479 was recently up for sale on E-Bay. As far as I can tell it didn't sell.
