Hey Guys and Girls,

Anyone out there know much about Skywest Airlines and their employment requirements/structure?

Do they look at pilots from New Zealand?

What are the work and pay conditions like?

And, are they looking for pilots at the moment?

Cheers in advance,

VD

Strangely enough this info is on their website...(!)

I believe they have recently hired a few, not too sure about now though. They're not the sort of company that has a huge staff turnover. After all, wouldn't you sit on a good job if you had one too?

bluddy hell, how is a kiwi going to get a look in at skywest when they don't trust any AUSSIES that were born west of the bight?

give it a go, but skywest is a bit of a club for the WA born and bred.

small outfit syndrome, like any other small operation. that is not a criticism nor having a go at their standards, just an observation.

XR are a great company, and yes from what I hear around the ramp they have hired at least three or four pilots in the last few weeks -some local guys from other operators as well as some from up north if I recall correctly...

Cabin crew are also great, their training team esp are a lovely bunch... but I suppose being a pilot you won't care much about that :}

Anyway the flying is varied, they do PER-Geraldton (3hr 30 turnaround i think...) also the other spots like Exmouth/Learmonth (nice holiday spot :D) and of course the Bali charters and Darwin o/n with the F-100. Not to mention the contract flights for Argyle Diamonds and other mining places like Leonora/Leinster. Oh yes and you have Albany & Esperance down south as well...

Obviously they'll be picking up some nice(r) places next year (namely Kalbarri & Shark Bay) and the LST-LEO will be going over to Skippers, who are more of a mining flight mob than XR...

All in all not a bad set of destinations in this state, it could be worse, like Meekatharra or Murrin Murrin!!! :} :E

Sounds like gettaway.....................NOT.

Skysista, you would have been better leaving all those ritsy destinations out of it. It didn't sell the idea very well.

I guess you covered with the statement All in all not a bad set of destinations in this state, it could be worse,

What sort of compass do you use ITCZ?

Skywest know that by selecting pilots "from" the West they are a lot less likely to lose them after a couple of years as they try to move to a job closer to "home". I think this is a good strategy and would partly explain the stable pilot group.

Yes they have been recruiting enthusiastically of late.

That is a VERY GOOD strategy.

I agree, seeing as WA-based guys with families or commitments here are far more likely to STAY, XR are being very bloody smart about it. I know three or four guys who fly for them, most with families so of course they are happy to be based here.

RENURPP, I was not trying to say that all their ports are glamorous, just giving the orginal poster an idea of what s/he will be flying to should they get a job there. Yes some of the places are boring, then again you sound like you've never been up to Shark Bay or Exmouth for a holiday - really lovely nature spots. WHo cares if there's no night life, there's more to trips than that...

COnsidering that you could be o/n at Meekatharra or Argyle, I think I'd pick Exmouth or Darwin/Bali any day!! :}

Errr....

Skywest? Have not worked there - know people that have. Sounds like just about the best regional job in Australia.

By the sounds of it they look after their people and their people look after them. Happy people like to stay.

SkySista -

XR don't overnight at Exmouth, and it's not like walking around the tarmac at Learmonth would be any different to Meeka or Murrin Murrin, lets face it you don't fly for a company because of the destinations anyway do you?

Oops!

Icarus, compass re-swung with the addition of the correct type of alcohol -- coonawarra red ;)
