Can't think of a feasible alternative though - life imprisonment in Guantanamo Bay doesn't seem a realsitic option.

If the new regime in Iraq is to resemble the sort of government we call democracy then he has to be tried in court and the new laws must be seen to work - otherwise all the lives have been lost for nothing.
However, I doubt very much if that country can be run our way - I suspect a benign dictatorship is what they need to resolve the conflicting requirements of tribe, religion and sect.
Something along the lines of pakistan then?
